Secret Love: Overture (Yaoi Manga)
Takumi Toba is both the agent and secret lover of the fabulously popular model, Sagami. Takumi knows he should be happy, both for Sagami's love and his growing success. As his acting career takes off, however, he's given the lead role in a new drama series. Sagami ends up spending more and more time at the studio with the female lead. Takumi has always urged Sagami to keep his personal life separate from business, but now Takumi can’t put away his feelings of doubt and jealousy, even on the job! When a magazine scandal breaks with photographs of Sagami and a mysterious woman, will Takumi be able to keep it together?

I may be easily impressed right now because I've been reading a lot of ill-conceived and poorly executed yaoi recently--but the beauty of this volume is that it isn't either of those at all. The stories aren't all related, but show direction and potential. There's a consistency to them even if not an over-arching plot per se. They aren't one note, either. This volume is full of everything from cute to super sexy (both mature and tasteful, a rare winner in that regard) to emotionally tugging. Sugita's art is also nice to look at. Stylistically, it's obvious this is from her early work, but she still has a clear sense of aesthetic and knows how to fill a page well. (Really, what I mean is she can draw. There are no obnoxiously spacious pages either; this is honestly 180 pages of art.) In retrospect, I'll probably wish there was more space devoted to the title story, but I'm looking forward to the next volume now. Secret Love: Finale (Yaoi Manga)

This the first part of a two part story about a model and his manager/lover. They have to worry about being outed and possibly having to find other work. They are gay lovers and mangers shouldn't be with their charges. However, Sagami isn't worried, he'll choose his lover over work every time. Toba worries enough for both of them. It is a good story and nothing very bad will happen to them. Everything is handled with humor. Where the story falls apart for me, is the ridiculous idea that Sagami could be a model at all. He is so plain. This is a weakness for the mangaka, the art is poor.
The main story is followed by some short stories. The first one is about a blond American boy trying to persuade his friend to become his boyfriend. The second is forgettable. The final story is maybe the best in the book. A relationship develops between a cop and his charge. The story is intriguing as there is some danger and the resolution of their relationship is neatly done.
