Product Description

Book Description

On 30 March 1970, Secretariat drew his first breath in a little white foaling shed on a historic farm called The Meadow in Caroline County, Virginia. Three years later he would leave the nation breathless as he captured the Triple Crown, shattering records and rivals alike. At The Meadow, "America's Super Horse" learned to gallop across its rolling fields and its loamy track. There, Secretariat first felt the calming hand of a groom, the taste of a bit in his mouth and the weight of a rider on his back. At The Meadow, the foundation was laid for a legend. Though much has been written about his spectacular racing career, the complete story of Secretariat's birthplace and the Chenery family who raised and raced him has never been told ...until now. And a Chenery granddaughter is telling it. "Secretariat's Meadow -- The Land, The Family, The Legend" reveals an intimate picture of this storied place from the viewpoint of Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery (Tweedy) and granddaughter of Meadow Stable's founder Christopher T Chenery. Co-authored with Leeanne Meadows Ladin, the book tells not only Secretariat's story, but the story of an enduring piece of land where an "empire built on broodmares" eventually produced an immortal son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secretariat, Nov 17 2010
This review is from: Secretariat's Meadow: The Land, the Family, the Legend (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful, historic book about the Chenery's contribution to racing, and also about how Secretariat came to "be". It is a reminder of how incredible and special horses and horse racing is...and by just a slim sliver of luck and a whole bunch of strength and fortitude by Penny Chenery we got to see this spectacular animal.
How nice that Ms. Chenery got to see the movie made about her horse, and that how popular it has been.
Beautiful photographs!! I am happy to have it on my coffee table where I can pick it up any time and leaf through it whenever I want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific!, Sep 23 2011
This review is from: Secretariat's Meadow: The Land, the Family, the Legend (Hardcover)
Like a lot of people in the early seventies I enjoyed watching on tv the exploits of Secretariat. This book brings back all the great memories of this marvelous horse. I very much enjoyed the Family history and that of the farm where Secretariat was born.
I found the book well written and easy to read. After watching the movie I wanted more and this book delivered.
