Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Special Jury Prize winner at the 2002 Sundance Festival, director Steven Shainberg's film deftly turned a particularly tweaked boss-employee relationship into a warm, sometimes amusing meditation on sadomasochism. And while composer Angelo Badalamenti's creepy, neo-gothic soundscapes for longtime collaborator David Lynch have generally milked humanity for every last drop of perverse behavior, here his delicate, evocative instrumental underscore does precisely the opposite. Ever atmospheric, Badalamenti's electro-acoustic work--perfectly set up by Leonard Cohen's smoky "I'm Your Man"--creates a sense of both mystery and adventure, a gentle musical portrait of the troubled, longing souls beneath the overt S&M trappings. If its occasionally tinkly interplay between piano and guitar sometimes seem a tad New-Agey in scope, it also seems a telling metaphor for the story's elusive boundary between emotional darkness and light. Lizzie West's alt-folk "Chariot's Rise" neatly bookends Badalamenti and Cohen with an upbeat irony that also parallels the film's undercurrent of interpersonal fantasy. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars An amusingly honest look at an S&M lifestyle relationship, Sep 2 2003
By
Joan Steinberg (Manchester, Ct United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Secretary (Audio CD)
At first glance, the relationship between Lee Holloway, and her often aloof boss, Mr. E Edward Grey, appears strained if not ridiculous. Lee is fresh out of a mental institution where she has been housed for an unspecified amount of time for her masochistic practice of cutting herself. Mr Grey is on his quest for yet another secretary who may or may not supply him with the typing and office skills he so earnestly seeks, among other things. Enter Lee Holloway, who is embarking on her first job interview. The pairing of the two looks almost promising.
As Lee Holloway grows personally under the direction and humiliation leveled upon her by her caustic employer, we watch as her relationship blooms into love through submission to the one man in her life who is able to fulfill her needs for acceptance and guidance.
To the uninitiated, Lee's "need" for spankings and other assorted sadomasochistic rituals may seem repugnant. It soon becomes apparent that the total power exchange is a need both require to rise from the ashes of their lives.
The final blending of the BDSM lifestyle and everyday life that she and Mr. Grey create so that "we look like any other couple one might see" lends honesty and reality to a lifestyle that is often cloaked in mystery and misconception.
We cannot dismiss the humorous bratty nature of Miss Holloway as she proves as submissive, she is amusingly capable of running a law office and topping from the bottom, and by doing so gives both the viewer and Mr.Grey a laughingly good run for their money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angelo Badalamenti! That explains why the soundtrack is AMAZ, Aug 6 2003

Angelo Badalamenti! That explains why the soundtrack is AMAZING!
Wow, this movie was so great, but the movie's music was an ultra sexy crutch that made it so stellar with the plot and story! Whenever there are new sounds I fall for in movies, this guy has been the common thread behind it all. He "is" truly AMAZING! THANK YOU ANGELO!
