I had seen the author Arthur Benjamin perform on [...] and when I found this book I was very excited. In order to get as good as him, though, just reading this book cover to cover isn't enough. Major practice is required. The book does give you hope, and I sincerely believe that what he does is within reach of everyone touched by his instruction. He has his method and to do things later in the book you need to summit to him from the beginning and practice what he tells you as you progress through the stages and chapters. You get out of the book what you put into it.This book will free you from need for calculators (within reason), and give you confidence in your own mind. You'll learn to use the faculties that lie dormant within all of us. To sum everything up, it really works and there are some pretty neat tricks for pencil and paper math as well, including a technique to convert strings of numbers to words so that you won't forget phone numbers or birthdays ever again!

In school mathematics, children, (and adults) are taught to addition, (and subtraction, multiplication, etc.) all right to left. This really makes no sense, as we read numbers from left to right, say them out loud from left to right, and so forth. Learning the left to right method, for those who have yet to try it, will feel more natural almost immediately. It is infinitely easier to do mental calculations this way, not to mention useful for estimation. Think about it: its far more useful to say "a little over 1200," than "ends in 8." This book will teach you how to break down calculations into simpler problems, so that you are working with less digits at a time, and can start saying the answer out loud, before you have even finished the computation! The book is designed so that at no point in time do you need a piece of paper, pencil, or even calculator throughout, (answers to exercises are in the back of the book). The book is a great place to start for beginners, and only assumes the ability to add and multiply single digit numbers. As for those who already consider themselves proficient at mental calculation, rest assured that the last few chapters will provide enough challenge to warrant the purchase. Figuring out how to square a 5 digit number in your head isn't something many people have figured out on their own. Having the ability to crunch numbers with ease, is a skill that transfers to many areas of life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone of any age. Teeming of fantastic explanation and inspiration!
