Product Description

Product Description

Seed to Seed is a complete seed-saving guide that describes specific techniques for saving the seeds of 160 different vegetables. This book contains detailed information about each vegetable, including its botanical classification, flower structure and means of pollination, required population size, isolation distance, techniques for caging or hand-pollination, and also the proper methods for harvesting, drying, cleaning, and storing the seeds. Seed to Seed is widely acknowledged as the best guide available for home gardeners to learn effective ways to produce and store seeds on a small scale. The author has grown seed crops of every vegetable featured in the book, and has thoroughly researched and tested all of the techniques she recommends for the home garden. This newly updated and greatly expanded Second Edition includes additional information about how to start each vegetable from seed, which has turned the book into a complete growing guide. Local knowledge about seed starting techniques for each vegetable has been shared by expert gardeners from seven regions of the United States-Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast/Gulf Coast, Midwest, Southwest, Central West Coast, and Northwest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seed to Seed- Honest and Unbiased, Jan 4 2011

This review is from: Seed to Seed: Seed Saving Techniques (Paperback)
I was looking for a book that thoroughly covered saving seeds- how to do it, what they looked like, when to do it, etc. because to be honest, I knew nothing about it.
I can now highly recommend this book. It provides all the info you need to know, including: an explanation on how plants cross-pollinate, how you can prevent cross-pollination, how to process seeds for each vegetable type, how to tell when seeds are ready, how to harvest seeds, how to hand pollinate, why to grow heirlooms, as well as numerous seed saving/buying sources so as to obtain rare and common varieties. This is a book I am using often and will continue to do so. When I need to know how far apart I plant different varieties, 'Seed to Seed' is the book I take off my shelf.
It's definitely worth a buy- you won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, covoluted., Aug 30 2010

As much as I would love to give this book four stars, however I found it so over my head I felt like a bit of an idiot. Many things are very clear, but there are other parts that assume you know certain terminology and that (if you don`t), you have a reference beside you. Perhaps it was just me. The methods are well researched and I have tried to follow the directions. I suppose we will see next season, wherein I may add an additional review!
