Book Description

Feb 9 2012

What do we really know about the vital stuff in our veins?

Some people faint at the sight of blood while others eat black pudding or sip blood soup. Some can't think of it without hearing the faint rustle of a vampire's cape. Others rush to see the latest gory horror film. Why does blood hold such emotional power?

Around the world, blood has always been a symbol of both life and death: blood rites, blood oaths, and blood-soaked legends. Today, we have scientific facts about blood types, transfusions, blood-borne illnesses, and crime-scene blood spatter. Yet the fluid still holds mystery.

Open this book to learn about the symbolism and reality of blood, from its role in ancient sacrifices to its uses in modern medicine and forensics.

Striking black-and-red illustrations appear throughout, with each chapter introduced in comic-book style by young Harker, a goth narrator with a worrisome relish for all things bloody. As Seeing Red reveals, blood continues to make us cringe while holding us in its thrall.

Review

This book is likely to be selected for the graphics, with the additional benefit of solid, if provocative, information. (Janet S. Thompson School Library Journal 20120701)

This book is a gem -- packed with bloody trivia, historical tidbits and presented in a contemporary graphic novel-like format that will appeal to even the most squeamish of teens. (KC Dyer The Winnipeg Review 20120705)

Kyi's matter of fact, macabre style is very effective in drawing readers (especially reluctant ones) to her text. (CM 20120504)

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive to the last drop. Aug 25 2012
By Steven R. McEvoy HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER

This book was a wonderful surprise. The cover and title grabbed my attention right from the start and it just got better with every page I read. The chapters are:

Introduction. The Bloody Facts
1. Blood and Ritual
2. Rites of Passage
3. Sips and Suppers
4. Ties That Bind
5. Reading The Blood
6. A Taste For Blood
Further Reading
Selected Sources
Index

The format of this book was wonderful, fully illustrated and even the text is part of the design and layout to make the book visually and viscerally appealing. The book looks at historical facts, trends, and mythology, and moves on down to current science, both medical and forensic. It will have an appeal to a wide range of readers. With break-out sections expanding on the main points, quick facts and quirky illustrations, it will keep the reader turning the pages and when they hit the end wanting more. The story is told in part as a young man researches the history of blood and his girlfriend the vampire shares her insight. This was an amazing story to read; I literally could not put it down and read it in a single sitting. And I know lots of children and even parents who will enjoy all the knowledge shared in such a playful way. The story was so great I have already tracked others down by both the author and illustrator to read and that says a lot about how good it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good "ick" factor; well-based on facts, lots of illustrations Oct 19 2012
By M. Knapp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Highly illustrated, medium "ick factor" nonfiction about blood and its place in the body and in culture throughout history. After a few pages of facts about blood, the book spends most of the time on ritual, with a couple of pages each on blood sacrifices, rites of passage, male bonding, menstruation, scientific discoveries, crime investigation and a wealth of other topics (including zombies and vampires), arranged roughly chronologically and ending with the briefest of discussions og whether violent video games lead to a violent society. (No conclusion is drawn by the author.) If you are a reader looking for "just the facts" about blood, you might be distracted by the "graphic novel" nature of the book - lots of illustrated blood splatters, huge typefaces, comic book panels and cartoons. On the other hand, if you are (or know) a child in middle school, who has a fascination with the icky, ooky, and occasionally gory history and culture of blood, this book is a great way to spend a few hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grosssss! I LOVED IT! Feb 11 2013
By Mary Lavers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
You really can't go wrong with Tanya Lloyd Kyi! She's the author of several other books for children, particularly specializing in the "so gross but so cool" categories. Her 50 Underwear Questions was fantastic, but Seeing Red: The True Story of Blood is stellar. The book explores all the ways in which blood has been interpreted, misinterpreted, used, consumed, avoided, feared, ritualized and just plain obsessed over. She looks at bloodletting, vampire lore, menstrual myths, human sacrifice, blood spatter and even blood recipes (if someone offers you blodplattar pancakes, think twice!). It's creepy and gross and SO good. It's also really informative. Plus the illustrations by Steve Rolston hit just the right mark between cute and gory. My inner twelve-year-old is salivating over this book!
