What would cause the Amish to move to Colorado, leaving family and friends behind?

Some Amish are making the trek to Colorado for cheaper land. Others are fleeing strict bishops with long memories.

For Emily Detweiler and her family, the move is more personal. Tragedy struck Emily in Ohio, shaking loose everything she believed was firm, including her faith. Her family took the bold step of leaving Ohio to resettle in a small Amish community in Canaan, Colorado, where they hope the distance will help erase painful memories.

David Stoltzfuss family moved to Colorado for reasons he doesnt understand. But Canaan is turning out to be something other than the promised land they all anticipated. Fearing that a health condition will cut his life short, David plans to return home to Paradise, Pennsylvania, as soon as he can. But then he meets Emily, who stirs feelings in his heart despite his apprehension about the future.

Emilys growing love for David surprises her, but she fears that he will find out the truth about her past and reject her. But what if the truth is that they are made for each other? And that God longs to give them the desires of their hearts if only they will seek Him first?

Seek Me With All Your Heart

By Beth Wiseman

Another great book from my favorite Amish fiction author!! What a delight to read!!

This book is a first in a new series, taking places in Colorado- called A Land of Canaan Novel.

It is still in Beth's wonderful style of writing but the Amish story takes a whole new twist- by taking place in a state not considered by many to be a residence for the Amish.

The land in this area is cheaper, so many are moving in this direction, others are trying to escape memories of strict bishops. For the main character, Emily, she and her family have moved there due to a very personal tragedy. I will not tell you more of this, as it would be a spoiler!! Coming from Ohio, in hope of helping heal painful memories, this family encounters more challenges. Memories seem to follow Emily wherever she is. She has to let the Lord heal these and this book, has her work her way to that purpose.

Another character, David, moves there with his family, not really understanding why they HAD to move. He has a serious health condition that makes him fear for his future and afraid of making commitments to anyone- even to the extent of becoming close to others. All he wants to do , is return home to Paradise, PA- until he meets Emily - and then new problems arise!!

This young couple just has one difficulty after another- each with fears, but now sharing them with each other. Can they overcome their challenges to form a lasting relationship? You will have to read to find out!!

A great book, one you can not put down until you finish it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Seek Me With All Your Heart Feb 21 2011
By Bonnie
Format:Paperback
Seek Me With All Your Heart is the first book in Beth Wiseman's "A Land of Canaan" series. We are taken to a new Amish settlement in Colorado where families from larger Amish communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania have settled to find land at lower prices and sometimes to start a new life free from the burdens and tragedies they have left behind. The most prominent story line is that of Emily and David, two young adults who because of hardships in their pasts are convinced that they will be unable to find and keep love, despite a strong desire to do so. It is through their friendship that Emily and David are able to reconcile and heal the hurts of their pasts.

I read a lot of Amish fiction, but have never read anything written by Beth Wiseman so it took me a little time to become used to her writing style. There were some things in this book that made me question its authenticity and at times I found the voices she gave to her characters to be a little modern to really connect with them as Amish. Once I got used to her writing through I thoroughly enjoyed the story. There were enough plot twists and interesting characters to hold my attention and I was really happy with the story that developed around Martha (the grumpy English neighbor).

I was pretty excited to find out that Seek Me With All Your Heart is somewhat of a continuation of Wiseman's earlier Daughters of the Promise series. I look forward to the next book in the Land of Canaan series and will definitely be picking up her earlier books.

I would give this book 3.5*s/5 and look forward to reading more from Beth Wiseman!

I have read all of Beth Wiseman's books! This new series promises to be another winner! Relocating some of the characters from previous books (Daughters of Paradise) was an excellent idea. It is a good lesson to all readers to learn, that with God's help and the love of family and friends we can over come personal trials and tribulations. All readers of this book have had similar stories I'm sure. It is extremely hard to wait for the next book to be published!

Keep them coming Beth!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly written for its target audience, I suspect Dec 26 2010

A bittersweet story of redemption as a young Amish girl who's been assaulted and a young Amish man who's survived a severe health crisis find their way to each other despite their problems. There's a happy ending for them, but not necessarily for other characters, who experience a series of problems.

Pluses: the characters in the series are not idealized. Amish people are just as subject to the normal problems of human life, which include health, crime, relationships, dealing with life stages. I also appreciated that the novel dealt with a growing experience in Amish communities: the move away from the traditional historical settlements in Pennsylvania and the Midwest to other areas where land is cheaper or supervision of the churches is less stringent. Despite the fact that the plot of this story is clearly that of a traditional romance, the story itself does not take a romantic view of the world.

Negatives: I still find it hard to read these novels about Amish people written by non-Amish. This one has no severe errors in discussion of the Amish way of life itself, but the interior lives of the characters are described in a way that makes it seem like the Amish way of thinking about life, the universe/salvation and the self is just the same as ours. This may be true on the very fringes of the Amish community (which this book discusses) but as to elsewhere, it's not really accurate. The relationship of the self to the community in the Amish world is strongly in contrast to that in the English world, and this book hides that completely.

But it was a good read, nice to cuddle up in bed with on a winter night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seek Me great first book of Land of Canaan Series! Oct 14 2010

Beth Wiseman's Seek Me With All Your Heart is a great start to her brand new series. You join the Stoltzfu family, Lillian, Samuel, David, and the girls after their journey from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Canaan, Colorado.
Upon arriving things seem worse than they expected, but trusting in God brings them through.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I am not usually a fast reader, but Beth's books are easy to read. If you haven't picked up this book, I highly recommend it.
