Sonic Generations: Does it make the cut?,
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sonic Generations (Video Game)
Sonic fans rejoice! Sega gives us a chance to see the best of sonic in one game. We have Sonic from the classic era, and modern era sonic tackling Dr.Robotnik/Eggman in unison! We have classic levels with updated graphics, and revamps of modern levels to accommodate for classic style gameplay. Sounds pretty good in theory, and from my understanding, the console versions hit it head-on.Unfortunately, the handheld version falls short. There are lots of unlockables and fun little missions, and a multiplayer race feature which picks up some of the slack, but he story seems half-hearted, and the game ends up being really short and quite easy. Regardless, if you are a Sonic fan, this will be a nice title to add to your library.

This game looks and runs great on the 3DS, but I was wholly unimpressed by this title overall. It feels like a "half" effort to me, standing a whole level below the console versions in terms of presentation. The core gameplay itself is solid Sonic, and for those who are hardcore fans that will probably be enough. But, for those of us who were hoping for something more to whet our adventuring appetite with, it might be best to wait for a future Sonic title with more effort gone into it, or rather pick up Mario 3D Land instead. This game on the whole is not bad by any means, but its not great either. If you like Sonic in the vein of side scrolling action with a clumsy story and ability to whizz through a game in several hours, or are looking to rekindle your side scrolling Sonic love, I say pick it up, but if you are looking for something deeper then it would be wise to invest your time and money elsewhere. It is quick, not very deep, and simply 2D side-scrolling action. Compared to Dreamcast hits like Sonic Adventure, the Wii title Sonic Colours, or even this very same game on the PS3/Xbox 360, it feels like a cheap imitation.

Not quite the console counterpart, but holds it's own.,

Owning both Sonic Generations on my PS3 and 3DS, I would have to say both games may look identical yet they offer unique experiences. Sonic Generations for home console is beyond a shadow of a doubt the best 3d sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2. Great re-imaginations of classic stages from past games, corny and annoying dialogue yet you still get that warm and fuzzy feeling playing it knowing it's Sonic's 20th anniversary. Sure sometimes the controls seem broken, or the camera angles seem to ruin your flow of speed, it's still a great sonic game. The 3ds version to my recollection is actually a totally different game. Do not be deceived by the cut/paste cover of this game, sonic team offers 7 new stages not available in the home console (Casino Nights, Mushroom Hill, Emerald coast etc.) Hardcore sonic fans will wet themselves with delight popping this cartridge in their 3ds's. I myself was impressed with the visuals for a 3ds title, they were rather sloppy with the 3d sonic stages though, the perspective never changes from 2d side scrolling. Exclusive boss battles and stages are what will entice you to purchase this title. I highly recommend this to true sonic fans who surely own a 3DS. I was somewhat hesitant at first, but I truly am happy to have picked it up. Overall, it's an enjoyable experience and a solid entry to the vast library or portable sonic games.
