Product Description

Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s, Europe divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon that are fighting against the Empire, who is intent on unifying the continent under its power. The Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the ¿Valkyria¿- an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery, the fate of the Federation¿s ability to win the war and a hope for a better future hangs in the balance.

This is a surprisingly tight game, with a great art style. What's great is that it really is a demanding strategy game with a really well thought out mix of action and pre-battle preparation. Most of the mid to late missions are challenging enough that players will need to try a couple of times before victory, so just because of that there is a lot of replayability here. There is an impressive level of customization for individual characters, armoured units and skills. As the game goes along, more features and options are revealed, so that the game asks you to make decisions on a level not expected in the earlier stages. It's very satisfying. Mastering this game will take weeks. My only criticisms are that the cutscenes are quite long. Of course, you can skip them. Once you are in the missions, the pacing is perfect, and I really have no fault with the story. In that department it's a step above most games.

Overall, it's innovative, well designed, artistically quite nice and crucially, it's fun. Fans of strategy, war games and/or anime should give it a look.

Valkyria Chronicles, is an amazing and fresh take on the Tactical Strategy game in part pioneered by the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. Doing away with the grid, the game add an additional element of tension to the battles, and smoothly recreates some of the appeal of real time in a turn based strategy. With a detailed storyline and exceptional battles, you'll find yourself gripped by both the story and the action. Truly this is a next generation Tactical Strategy, and I hope that other developers are taking notes, if you enjoy strategy games, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Even if you don't, or have never played one before, I feel Valkyria Chronicles merits your attention, either as a first experience, or a second chance on the genre.

It would be a tremendous loss if this game failed to gain the attention it so deserves.

I was unsure about this game initially as the unconventional combat style seemed like it might not work too well, but now I am really glad I gave this game a chance. It is a shame it is not more publicized, as the gameplay is fantastic, the story is very good, and the graphics are very unique. This is by far my favorite PS3 game to date. I normally do not take the time to write reviews, but I felt this game was so good it warranted me taking the time.

The learning curve is fairly low as the units are simplistic as are the levelling systems, and combat is relatively straightforward. I liked that I could pick it up and get into it right away. I suggest everyone who likes RTS or RPG games to give this at least a rental, as it is well worth your time, and needs to be given a chance.

This game is extremely amazing. It mixes the turn based strategy, RPG elements and 3rd person shooter gameplay all in one. And does it perfectly. It's gotten critical success in reviews, but sadly isn't doing as well as it deserves in the commercial department.

Sega outdid themselves with this title. The visuals are beautiful, the gameplay is fluid and fun, the story is amazing.

I recommend this to any RPG fan, any strategy fan and even 3rd person shooter fans. It's something different and unique. Which is wonderful in a industry full of the same old formulas in games.

If you like strategy games, do yourself a favor, take a closer look at this game. The Demo that's available on the PSNetwork does not do a very good job of selling this game. To get a better perspective, go out and rent it, and put in a good few hours. You'll likely find the narrative unnerving at the start, and might skip through the rather lengthy script to get to the actual battles. But this game does grow on you; the story does, with its weird take on an alternative European history (it doesn't shy away from touchy issues, but deals with them in a sensitive, if a tad naive, way) and the game play gets deeper and more absorbing as you proceed through the campaign, with a lot of customization and unlockables. The advice I give you of renting this--probably bad advice; I myself liked it enough that I kept it past the return date and got charged for a second week. The game is good enough and long enough to justify a couple of weeks of rental, maybe even a buy.

I can't praise this game highly enough - to my taste in games it is absolutely fantastic. The story is gripping, with more heart-stopping moments than most games and many of the battles really feel like you're participating in something important. Not everyone likes the gameplay style, however. It is played in both an overhead turn-based mode and a somewhat abstract third-person shooter mode. I love this mix: you still get the turn-based strategy depth, but you get to also experience the actions you take right down on the battlefield from the soldier's perspective (like using cover to block line-of-sight). Other great features: soldier-specific special abilities that makes each feel unique, leveling up soldiers, research tech trees, load out different weapons and equipment for soldier or tank.

This is the best game I've played in a long time and one of the best ones on the PS3. The art style and story is amazing. Easy to play and the story keeps you going. It is even fun to watch other people play it. I recommend it to all PS3 owners. With surround sound it's even more amazing because you can hear where the bullets are coming from and rustling in the bushes.
