Excellent for some, May 11 2008

This is an excellent reference book for scholars and for the "absolutely rabid" Mahler addicts. (OK, I confess I'm one.)
It contains hundreds of letters Mahler wrote between 1877 and 1911.
For the real scholars, there is an introductory list of the letters in chronological order, telling to whom they were sent, and the date, when known. (There is even a comparitive listing of letters by their old and new numberings.)
There is a biographical listing of addressees, which helps us understand the relevance of the letters, and there is also a separate index of Mahler's compositions, AND a general index of names and places.
This is obviously a very useful work for scholars and researchers, but it's also just plain interesting for those of us who love Mahler, to read his words, his thoughts, and the sentiments he carefully expresses to the recipients of these letters.
