"Sending you Sammy" by Sarah Butland is a picture book focused on the ever important topic of nutrition and healthy eating education for kids. The main character, Sammy, is a 10 year old boy who understands the importance and benefits of eating healthy foods - "he asked his mother for watermelon instead of candy and for juice instead of pop". And because he is so knowledgeable on this topic, he is chosen by a magician to become a superhero at night by the name of "Banana Boy" and is asked to change other kids' bad eating habits. The book contains more text than a typical picture book, which makes it a great transition for older kids who are starting to read on their own but are not yet ready for a chapter book. The illustrations are bright and colourful, and they bring the story alive. This is the first book in the Adventures of Sammy series, and I hope we see more to come as this is a topic that needs to be discussed and focused on within our over-indulgent society!
