After a year and a half of patiently waiting, the North American release of Senna on Blu-ray has arrived. Fans could have purchased the Universal region free edition from Amazon.co.uk about a year ago but, if like me, you were expecting to get the 2 versions of the film on the North American release, you will be sadly disappointed. Mongrel Media has to be one of the worst distributors around. The interviews for this film were shot in HD. Why is it then that the most recent interviews with Ron Dennis, Richard Williams, etc., cut from the final edit and come as special features totalling an extra 56 minutes, are cropped to a 1:33 format with an image quality that resembles VHS? In the UK, there was a region 2 (PAL) edition that had a production notes book as well as both versions of the film that has been discontinued. If by any chance anyone knows Asif Kapadia, please let him know that the company distributing his film is not treating it with the respect it deserves. I know this will not happen, but I can only hope that they eventually re-release a collector's edition similar to that in the UK for a North American audience. Excellent film that has been poorly handled.

For anyone interested in F1 or Senna himself this is an excellent choice. People will always argue whether or not he was the greatest driver just as they still do about Fangio or Schumacher. One thing no one can argue however is that he is one of the greatest. This DVD nicely encapsulates his life from karting to his untimely death. Some of the video leaves a bit to be desired but we're talking about the 70s, 80s and 90s, long before HD spoiled us all. Much of the DVD focusses on the competition with Prost but even that is appropriate because it dominated much of Senna's career and the F1 circus. Senna as a person comes through very well in the interviews.
Very highly recommended for anyone's racing library.

Rory, how many seconds did you spend on your review? The reason the Collectors Edition is expensive is because it includes a 1:12 scale diecast model of Senna's Lotus and a book. The Amazon.ca price of about $380 is much better than the prices charged in the UK which are about 280 GBP x 1.6 = ~ $415. Wake up!

Must have for every F1 fan
A rate it up there with the 1966 film "Grand Prix". Classic duel between Senna and Prost. A must see film.

A documentary so good, you forget how it ended (until it ends)

Entertaining
Fun to watch even for those who aren't racing fans. Gives an interesting look at the life of an iconic sportsman for those who weren't around or paying attention at the time.
