After a year and a half of patiently waiting, the North American release of Senna on Blu-ray has arrived. Fans could have purchased the Universal region free edition from Amazon.co.uk about a year ago but, if like me, you were expecting to get the 2 versions of the film on the North American release, you will be sadly disappointed. Mongrel Media has to be one of the worst distributors around. The interviews for this film were shot in HD. Why is it then that the most recent interviews with Ron Dennis, Richard Williams, etc., cut from the final edit and come as special features totalling an extra 56 minutes, are cropped to a 1:33 format with an image quality that resembles VHS? In the UK, there was a region 2 (PAL) edition that had a production notes book as well as both versions of the film that has been discontinued. If by any chance anyone knows Asif Kapadia, please let him know that the company distributing his film is not treating it with the respect it deserves. I know this will not happen, but I can only hope that they eventually re-release a collector's edition similar to that in the UK for a North American audience. Excellent film that has been poorly handled.

For anyone interested in F1 or Senna himself this is an excellent choice. People will always argue whether or not he was the greatest driver just as they still do about Fangio or Schumacher. One thing no one can argue however is that he is one of the greatest. This DVD nicely encapsulates his life from karting to his untimely death. Some of the video leaves a bit to be desired but we're talking about the 70s, 80s and 90s, long before HD spoiled us all. Much of the DVD focusses on the competition with Prost but even that is appropriate because it dominated much of Senna's career and the F1 circus. Senna as a person comes through very well in the interviews.
Very highly recommended for anyone's racing library.

I ordered this thinking it was an English production only to find it was all in a foreign language with no sub titles. I eventually found the English version on line and for free to watch.

A rate it up there with the 1966 film "Grand Prix". Classic duel between Senna and Prost. A must see film.

"Senna" was a triumph of story-telling. It made me, someone who had/has little to no interest in F1 racing, care about the drivers and their accomplishments. Its pace, effective use of in-cockput footage, and the whine of the turbo-chargers will glue you to your seat for the duration.

I have only one criticism. "Senna" requires the viewer to have some basic knowledge about F1 racing during the 1980s and 1990s. Luckily, the Special Features section of the disc is excellent, and I recommend that anyone who didn't follow F1 during that period watch the interviews before watching the documentary. Believe me, it will dramatically improve your viewing experience, and enhance your appreciation of Ayrton Senna's accomplishments. (I should note that I watched a pre-release version of "Senna" which included in the body of the documentary many of the interviews now in the Special Features section. That version was long (3-ish hours), but otherwise very accessible; it's a shame it wasn't also released.)

Whether you're a race fan or not, watch this movie - preferably with your digital audio system cranked up - but stay off the road for as long as it takes you to calm down and not pretend you're Senna rocketing out of the slip lane at the Tokyo Grand Prix. Your driver's licence and car insurance monthlys will thank you.

I preordered this as soon as I got the email from amazon.ca - it was then a month or so away. It's a very disappointing production. North America gets the 105 minute version and unbelievably badly presented interviews in the special features - who are these people, I wondered? The first few interviews were in English, and then we have some unsubtitled French and Portuguese. When Prost finally showed up, down in the bottom right corner are the letters Pro... this is the best transfer that the whizzes at Mongrel Media can do?!?

Watching this DVD really put me back to the height of my enjoyment of Formula 1, especially following the Senna years. This is a great opportunity to understand the depth of Senna's commitment to racing, almost surreal.
