5.0 out of 5 stars All I can say is, WOW June 19 2003
By SIGARM
These cans are currently being offered well below MSRP -- no, they aren't in danger of being retired any time soon (confirmed with Sennheiser customer service) -- and are truly the best bang for the buck. Despite the very positive reviews, I had two reservations about purchasing the 280s: 1) the tight, uncomfortable fit; and 2) cracking in the plastic headband that some have commented on. I have a big ol' head where adjustable ball caps barely fit me. The 280s aren't tight at all, but rather comfortably snug -- what do you expect from a closed design? Shooting range ear protection/muffs are 3 times more tighter than these. Secondly Sennheiser claims to never having heard about the cracking issue but will repair/replace your unit with no questions asked under their 2 year warranty.
Although plastic in design, the product has a solid, quality construction (made in Ireland if you care). An advantage, as you may already know, is that most of the components are designed to be replaced due to wear or damage. I like the folding convenience of the 280s, but don't expect them to fit in your coat pocket.
After burning these puppies in for 24 hours, the audio quality truly impresses with details I've never noticed before in my Definitive Technology and Aperion Audio home theatre/stero systems. Initially I thought the bass was a *little* lacking, but the cans have developed a fuller, richer sound with burn-in. I'm tempted to buy a second pair so I don't have to carry mine from home to work all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Daily use Headphones Nov. 26 2013
By Michael

Ive used mainly ear buds and lower quality phones before I picked up these bad boys, and I must say these phones are excellent for both daily use and critical listening. I'm no audiophile but the sound quality on these phones is superb. At a first listen the audio may seem a little "flat" but after getting use to the phones and probably the burn in the audio is very rich. Even using these 64 ohm phones on an iPhone delivers extremely satisfying results. I can hear little things I've never heard before in many songs, largely in part to the sound quality and isolation. The isolation or noise cancelling on these phones practically mutes everything else which is exactly what I wanted. The swivel on these phones allows them to be fit in a small backpack with a laptop, binder and tablet. The headphone isn't designed to be flashy with standard flat black plastic for the ear covers. The phones provide a decent amount of clamping to your head which can be at times uncomfortable but is rarely felt. The only semi-problem I have with these phones is the cable length. The cable is very long due to its "telephone cable-like windiness". This however is not Sennheisers fault as the phones are designed for a studio, not bunching up in your coat pocket. This length can be a plus sometimes however.

All in all an excellent pair of phones especially considering it's age (2001).

5.0 out of 5 stars Podcast perfection. Oct. 31 2011
Verified Purchase
Right or wrong, I cranked my headphones to a high volume near microphones during my many years working as a radio announcer. The HD 280 Pro 'phones allow me to resume doing this, as the sound is totally isolated from the mike. The seal is tight even over my eyeglass stems without uncomfortable pressure. The audio quality is acceptable, but lacking a bit in the low frequencies, and lacking transparency overall. These headphones are definitely "keepers" and I enjoy using them. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy on the ears Nov. 14 2013

The headphones are perfect; great sound, comfortable to wear, block out a lot of the surrounding noise, and components (according to the writeup) are easy to replace. (I have had no problem with them). Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair sound April 16 2014

A bit bulky and not entirely comfortable to wear for extended time but good sound coming out. Not used much, so can not comment on how they will fear but the cable is solid, the ear pads not so much.

These are the first set of headphones I bought for quality. They are very good. Bass is solid and not overpowering. Crystal clear.

Bass drops are amazing. Would recommend to anyone. Considering buying a second pair for work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant headphones but uncomfortable March 20 2014
Verified Purchase
I'm a big Sennheiser fan - been buying them for years so had no problem buying these on faith.

They sound just fantastic. Quite flat and I see some say they have no bass but I think they do. It's just a clean but strong bass helped by the frequency range of these I think. And they are really powerful - very loud with no distortion.

The problem is the tightness across the head. I was able to stretch them out a bit - took a chance and really pulled them apart with no problems. Certainly build quality is great.

They loosened a bit but still uncomfortable for me - I really tried to like them.

If you are used to these noise isolation type of headphones where they need to be a bit tight for the isolation then I can't recommend these enough they are great sounding. If not, I would try them on in the stores first.

Worth a try though definitely or try the 380 pro...I have heard they as good or better but more comfortable.

I've been using the phones for about 15 years and they're fantastic. I use them to play along and record drum sessions and they cancel out a lot of noise, especially the high-end. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Great soung
Great sound but I wouldn't call them noise cancelling. I live above a bar and hoped they would help drown out noise. They don't as well as I'd hoped.
