Sennheiser's HD 598's are great looking headphones that fit well and offer up impressive sound. Whilst many people like to point out all the high points, I want to make a critical analysis and point out some of the other things I have come to find in my time with the Sennheiser HD598. Headphones from this manufacturer are somewhat known for a break-in period of about 100 to 200 hours, the equivalent four to eight days of constant running at slightly higher than normal listening levels. The theory is that this works the outer ring of the driver's diaphragm, and creates a more pliable suspension. I am not sure that I buy the claims, as no other headphone or loudspeaker that I own has ever changed. However, I've had mine breaking-in on a headphone amplifier and stand for approximately fifty hours, and this was my second listen since taking them out of the box. I've been using a couple sources and means of amplification, and I think that solid state headphone amplifiers will work better than tube amplification, unless the output is taken off a cathode follower setup with a sufficiently low output impedance. The HD 598's have an impedance of 50 Ohms, so bare that in mind when seeking a source. With this in mind, I will tell you a bit about what I am experiencing while i uncover some interesting casual observations. Read on...

The gold plated hardware and 3.5-to1/4" gold jack was a nice addition, and will allow the user to get them playing music right out of the box. Each set of headphones features two security authentication codes to ensure you are not buying a fake set. They have a 2-year warranty and the good customer service that Sennheiser is known for.

From initial use of these headphones, the biggest thing I could notice was how nicely put together they were. The synthetic leather, velour ear pads and burl accents really do give it quite the sophisticated look. I purchased these headphones after coming from the Sennheiser HD 515s and I am incredibly satisfied with the sound quality and the build. When listening to music of all kinds I can hear everything more clearly. The bass and deeper sounds feel more "real" and lossless audio sounds incredible. Audio of all types sounds absolutely great and extremely well defined. Additionally, listening for extended periods of time is considerably comfortable and the headphones are surprisingly lightweight. I would highly recommend these to anyone as an upgrade and I absolutely love them.

I have spent time with many a headphone, including Sennheiser HD 650 and 800s, Denon D5000s, Audio Technica W 1000x, Ultrasone PRO 900s, etc., and these HD 598s, may be, with sound, comfort, aesthetic and price all factored in, the absolute best value I have ever come across. Astonishing comfort, versatile in terms of what you throw at them, with a lovely, balanced sound with little fatigue.. Yes, they are made in China, but if you can get past that, and can find them for about $300- (they are considerably cheaper in the US), they may be the only headphones you ever need - at least for rock/pop, jazz and classical. They are open, so you do get a bit of sound bleed, but they really are a great pair of cans, which benefit from amplification, but perform admirably without it. 1/4 jack with a 1/8 adapter included for iPod use.

These headphones are some of the best sounding head phones available for the money. The sound that sennheiser makes is phenomenal. These head phones replaced my HD 555 and they are slightly brighter sounding than those were. These headphones dont have a lot of bass so they aren't for the crowd that is looking for that specifically.

PRO:
- Great sound
- Easy to drive
- Extremely comfortable

CON:
- Not in love with the industrial design (this is a matter of personal preference)
- A bit too big to travel with
- Stock cable is ridiculously long
- 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter is inexcusably large

Overall the cons are not really cons and/or easily remedied. Recommended.

Who knew? I received these Sennheiser HD 598 Audiophile Headphones with High-Gloss Burl Wood Accents moments ago (right on time according to the shipping estimate). The first song I played was Chris Mann singing Because We Believe - downloaded from iTunes at 256 AAC. I can hear instruments I've never heard. I can hear him breathing. The performance is so alive. These are my first open headphones. Previously I've owned Bose AE2 and OE2 and Shure SRH440 with the 840 ear pad modification. I thought those sounded good - and they do, especially the brass instruments in classical music and film soundtracks. But there's no comparison. And the HD598s haven't even been burned in yet, which apparently they need according to reviews and comments on Headfi.org.

By the way, I'm running these off a 2011 iMac - no amp - right from the headphone jack. I'm planning on giving these a good long burn-in before I make any decision about getting a DAC/amp. Right now I'm leaning toward no since my ears are so happy.

Keep in mind I'm not big on bass and I've been looking for a neutral headphone. This is exactly what I've searched for.

I'm listening to Josh Groban (320 MP3). There are things that seem to be happening in the music somewhere behind me I had no idea was there. These headphones are incredible!!!
