Sennheiser RS170 Wireless Headphones

From the Manufacturer

Wireless headphones come in many shapes and sizes but few offer better home theater performance than the Sennheiser RS 170. This wireless headphone system is made up of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 170) and a multi-purpose transmitter (TX 170) which also functions as an 'easy-charge' cradle and docking station. The RS 170 also features a Dynamic Bass Boost and Surround Sound simulation mode for edge-of-your-seat excitement with your favorite music and movies.

There's no setup needed--simply plug the transmitter's cable into your HDTV or home theater system's output and you're ready to go. The wireless headphones operate on 2 AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries, which are included. The transmitter also acts as a charging stand for the headphones when not in use, and can fully recharge depleted headphone batteries in about 16 hours.

KLEER Wireless Audio

The RS 170 utilizes KLEER's lossless digital wireless audio transmission, offering a range of up to 260 feet for audiophile-grade sound and reception to four optional pairs of Sennheiser KLEER headphones. Never fuss with tuning again thanks to automatic, interference-free pairing between the headphone and transmitter. KLEER technology will not interfere with wireless networks or other 2.4GHz devices. Up to 4 compatible Sennhesier KLEER heaphones can be paired with the same transmitter for private listening for multiple individuals.

I bought these for my mother. She's hard of hearing and loves to watch TV in her condo, but doesn't want to turn up her TV. She loves these and uses them all the time. The sound is very decent, comparible to my Sen HD555 except lighter and a litle more comforable over a long period.

The range is good, constant all around her apartment and they don't cut out or have static. They come with an adapter so you can plug them into your RCA outputs. This is good because you don't need to adjust the volume on the TV. When I first set them up I put the stand on top of the PVR (which is metal). It was bearly audible, because it was on metal (its in the instructions). I placed on a wooden suface and it was fine.

I picked these because of the Sennheiser sound qualify and comfort, rechargeable batteries and good wireless connection, and the RS 170's have delivered as hoped if not more in all these areas.

The buttons are poorly placed and hard to use, especially for older not techinally inclined. And you do need to be careful in placing the headphones on the stand or else they won't recharge. Placing them on the stand does automattically turn them off and they use a standard AA rechargable battery.

This is my third Sennheiser wireless headset purchase. I purchased the RS 170 because it is a full 'over the ea'r set versus the' on the ea'r set I was using. I want wireless because I want to move around with the headset and not have it fall off into the sink for example. The on the ear set kept falling off too easily. While the sound quality is excellent, I was disappointed with the RS170 on three counts. The first is the range is not nearly as good as the other 2 sets I have owned. At least 50 ft shorter. The second is the placement of the control buttons. This I had known about from reviews before I purchased. The third is with the need to press the button on the transmitter to turn on the system. My previous sets turned on automatically when I lifted the headset from the charger. Only a problem for me because I keep the transmitter behind the TV set.

I purchased the Sennheiser RS 170s to replace a set of Sony wireless headphones that I had purchased about a decade ago. Though my Sonys were still worked as well as they did initially, I was growing tired of the frequent drop-outs, pops, and crackles and figured that with the explosive growth of technology there had to be something better on the market.

These Sennheisers certainly delivered on that score. The audio quality is excellent, and is easily on par or better than the pair of (wired) Audio-Technica ATH-M50 I own for critical listening. In the four months I've owned them, I've never heard any audio artifacts - no pops, cracks, hisses, or any other sound discolorations. They really are as good as wired.

Compared to my older 900 MHz Sonys, they have less range and are more awkward to use - but for me, both of these drawbacks are relatively minor. The transmitter for my Sony set used to broadcast 100% of the time, whereas the Sennheiser base station only broadcasts when turned on - from a power usage perspective, this is a good thing. Similarly, Sony wireless headphones have a unique band that turns the headphones on when you place them on your head; Sennheiser headsets must be explicitly turned on. However, I've found that the Sennheisers stay on my head much better than my old set - I've never been worried about them falling off. They are very comfortable to wear.

I was a bit concerned with range initially, though in practice it has turned out not to be an issue.

I was looking for a pair of wireless headphones to drown out the people upstairs when they have friends over and get noisy. I did a lot of research and settled on the RS170 headphones but was not a huge fan of the $399 price tag I was finding everywhere, not to mention the fact that no local stores actually had them. Some googling managed to find these headphones on Amazon for over $100 off the regular price! I oredered them right away, went with super saver shipping and 28 hours after shipping they were here!

Setting these puppies up was a snap. The directions are mostly images unless you use the CD that is supplied, but they are good enough to install the receiver without issue. Other than having to move some furniture to plug in the power supply, it took about 2 minutes to set these puppies up. It took a few hours for the batteries to charge up and then I immediately removed them from the cradle and took them for a try. I watched The Mummy and couldn't get over all the sounds I could hear that I would be able to hear just using the TV without jacking up the volume in incredible levels. The surround sound is awesome and the bass is terrific! I love it. I have only had them for 2 days but I love them and wear them even though the neighbors are quiet!

The buttons are a little small but if you can remember where they are they are super easy to use to control volume and turn bass boost or surround sound on/off.

Definitely recommend to everyone looking for awesome wireless headphones.
