Product Description

Ladies and discerning gentlemen - This is a must-have guide for the modern, independent woman to Seoul, South Korea. This book will enable travelers and visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the culture from the perspectives of two Korean American writers. The book was written with a humorous approach, merging the writers' experiences and backgrounds to share everything the authors wished they knew as young women in Asia's new culture destination that's so hot and sizzling right now, there's no question why it's called Seoul. It's a tell-all, no-holds-barred exposé of Korean culture but one with a good heart. It's all about the things they feel people traveling to Seoul should know.

The book has frank writer interviews, the latest information along with hot-spot recommendations, and cultural dos and don'ts. From the must-need information of where to eat, where to shop, to bizarre foods, with this guide in hand you'll be navigating Seoul and Korean culture in no time. The authors even have a section where Korean culture is put into context through a dissection of K-pop. There's also inspiring advice and words of been-there, done-that wisdom for going to a country you've never been to, but always wanted to go.

If you're still saving up for that trip to Seoul from years ago, this book will give you a glimpse of the city and beyond, so you can learn more about the culture and the way it works. You'll hopefully gain a deeper understanding and appreciation, so you can live, discover, and enjoy Seoul to the fullest, and do it all while entertained! 2.0 out of 5 stars For College Girls Only Sept. 6 2012

This book was written for shallow women in their early 20's looking to live in Seoul. It is HEAVILY skewed to shopping, with limited pages on eating and drinking. Almost nothing about culture, history, fine dining, politics, or anything else. If you're looking for a tour guide, this is NOT it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Korea for bimbos? March 11 2012

Firstly, this book has a huge US bias. If you are not from the US, I wouldn't bother buying it. For example, the authors say the weather in Seoul is like the weather in New York. I'm from Australia so that means nothing to me. They also devote a far bit of space to comparing Korean fashion brands to American ones. That might be really helpful if you want to travel to Korea to buy something that looks like American Apparel but personally I'd just go to the States for a holiday instead.

The book is written both for travellers to Seoul and those who live or plan to live there. I can see that the US/Korean brands would be helpful for US ex-pats.

Secondly, the authors get a bit preachy. In the food section, they constantly caution about over-drinking. I found this really annoying. There are sections on buying designer rip-offs and about plastic surgery. It's obvious the authors don't approve of either but they do mention it and give some tips.

Thirdly, the food section seems to go from assuming the reader knows nothing to assuming the reader has a pretty good knowledge of Korean cuisine. There are a number of food dishes mentioned without description. I did like the section on biazzre foods though. Good to know what dog stew is so I can avoid it!

Fourthly, some of the "cultural" manners tips are near insulting. I'm not sure what manners are like in the US but I'd say most of these things would apply in Western countries too - giving up your seat on the train for an elderly person etc.

On the positive side, they do give a good guide to various districts around Seoul which was one of the things I was looking for. I would like to have seen more on rock/indie music and, while there is a section on k-pop, nothing about how to find out about concerts or buy tickets. I'd have also liked to have read more about uniquely Korean fashion etc rather than those brands that are more global (ie. the same as the US).

Overall, this book caters to young (20 somethings) into nightclubbing and shopping for designer clothes. If that's what you're into, then it would be much more valuable and interesting than say a Lonely Planet guide. Otherwise I'd look elsewhere.

I thought this book gave a nice overview of everyday life in Seoul. I am female so reading a book written by two females about Seoul was helpful but this book could also be helpful for men too. I loved how it gave you tips on train scheduel and where to go when you get to the airport. Highly recommened people to read this!

I am not the target audience for Seoul Sweet Seoul as male and frequent Seoul visitor, but the book was an easy read and filled the gaps in my knowledge. If you are visiting Seoul, I recommend downloading a copy to your Kindle and bringing it with you.
