Good tracks, intermittent overall,

Unlike most Firefly fans, I came across Serenity first and tracked down the TV series afterwards. In addition to falling in love with Joss Whedon's creation, I was drawn to the music.The soundtrack has the tracks that really drew me in - the wonderful combination of acoustic guitar and orchestra, the crazy insertion of banjo, the haunting cello sounds - and the CD is worth it for these tracks alone. The problem is, that between these tracks - perhaps three or four of them - there is a great deal of what seems to be filler, with very little to distinguish them. Some of the sudden juxtapositions of euphonic and cacophonic sounds are deeply jarring without any musical or artistic justification. Also, it would have been nice to include the opening theme of Firefly. Worth it for fans, but you may feel like you're not really getting value for money.

Big Damn Music! From the first beat until the last... every tune is fantastic. I you love Firefly and Serenity and you'll love this without pause. My only disappointment was the omission of the acoustic version of the Firefly Theme as is played at the end of the credits. I guess that means I'll just have to watch the movie over and over to hear it!!

I'm a HUGE Firefly/Buffy/Angel/Joss Whedon fan, and I was going to pass on this soundtrack because of all the negative reviews on the US Amazon site. HOWEVER, I caved in and bought it as I absolutely LOVED the Serenity movie and wanted to hear the soundtrack for myself.Like others, I agree that a good chunk of the soundtrack is bombastic orchestral noise (for the battle scenes), BUT the other half is really reminiscent and evocative of the film and some of its moving scenes. Yes, these pieces are short, but really moving, haunting and stirring (basically all the tracks that are not centred around battles, with the exception of track 19 Jayne and Zoe/Final Battle - this one rocks!) I admit that I wasn't blown away the first time I listened to it, but I've been listening to it a lot more and it's really growing on me - so much so that I find myself humming it throughout the day. A lot of people have compared this to the Firefly tv soundtrack that you can download from the Fox Music site, and I love that soundtrack a lot. However, I'd have to say that Newman's score is a lot more filmic overall than Greg Edmonson's Firefly tv soundtrack. I like them both equally and highly recommend them to fans of Serenity and Firefly. Bottom line about this soundtrack - when it works, it's awesome. Give it a chance. Can't stop the signal!
