Need to inspire a bit of courage?, July 2 2008

This review is from: Sergio Makes a Splash (Hardcover)
In this adorable picture book, the title character, Sergio, a young penguin has a serious dilemma. He LOVES water--ice, baths, rain, puddles--but he doesn't love the "very deep kind." Why? Because he can't swim. Yep, that's right. Sergio is a penguin who can't swim. When his class goes on a field trip to the ocean, he is naturally frightened. But can a little encouragement from his teacher and classmates plus arm floaties, a snorkel, and life preserver give him the courage to jump in?
Edel Rodriguez's oil-based woodblock ink and digital media illustrations are fun and charming, and children will be drawn in by the bright aqua blue of the ocean that is the background throughout the book. And seriously...who can resist a penguin with arm and ankle floaties, a snorkle, and a polka-dotted life preserver?
This is a very fun book that could help give kids the courage to try something they may be afraid of, including taking that first plunge into the pool.

Wonderful story about trying something new, Jun 17 2008

This review is from: Sergio Makes a Splash (Hardcover)
Sergio loves water but not the deep kind. "When he's around water, Sergio can be: relaxed, happy, funny, playful and silly." Which makes sense because Sergio is a penguin from Argentina, down near the South Pole. His three favorite things are soccer, fish and water, especially water-but when his class goes swimming, Sergio is scared because he can't swim.
Sergio's friends quickly hop in but Sergio holds back, despite having on his floaties. Finally Sergio jumps in "but his aim is a bit off." He bumps and rolls into the ocean and disappears. Mrs. Waddle and his friends wait-and finally Sergio pops to the surface. Sergio discovers he loves the ocean and can't wait to come back. "That was better than the rain, puddles, and a cold bath all put together," says Sergio.
Edel Rodriguez wonderful illustrations work brilliantly with the charming text of Sergio Makes a Splash! The illustrations, created with oil-based woodblock ink, are printed in aqua, yellow and black, ensuring the colors pop and attract children's attention. The first illustration diagramming "Sergio" is especially captivating, pointing out his height (1 foot), weight (1 pound), his curious smile and perky "wings." The text is printed in large letters and some are included in the illustrations as dialogue bubbles.
Sergio Makes a Splash! is perfect for children worried about trying something new, especially swimming. As Sergio says on the back cover, "This is a great book! It's all about me!" Children are sure to agree.
Armchair Interviews also agrees.

My 2.5 year old son LOVES this book. It's the perfect book to read out loud to a young child because it is just the right amount of words to keep his attention. He loves all the pictures, and we've read it so many times he has started to memorize it. It's has beautiful graphic illustrations and tells a cute story. An absolute favorite in our house!
