Product Description

When Baby Bear must learn his alphabet in one day, Big Bird patiently takes him under his wing in Do the Alphabet. Only "The Method," (a hilarious combination of dance, song, visualization, and group therapy) can help Baby Bear on such short notice. The result is 40 minutes of ABC's Sesame Street style, where vibrant educational cartoons, enthusiastic kids, famous guest stars (here, Billy Joel), and harmonizing Muppets make lasting educational impressions. Children age 2 to 6 will enjoy the upbeat musical numbers dedicated to various letters; a favorite segment features the Boogie Woogie Piggies and their flashy rendition of the alphabet song. Throughout the well-paced show, Big Bird offers just the right blend of coaching and friendship, much like the ace support group leader he's mildly spoofing. Hats off to Sesame Street for helping Baby Bear--and his viewing audience--understand that learning takes time, patience, and a team effort. --Liane Thomas

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy Richard Scarry ABC instead June 24 2004
The problems with this DVD are that it doesn't effectively teach the alphabet and it is pretty annoying. A fair chunk of it is Baby Bear complaining with a whiny lisp, and Big Bird patronising him. Big Bird even runs an "alphabet support group" (like psychotherapy) which I think is a really unsuitable concept for young children. But worse than that, the letters are not taught in a systematic, complete way - only selected letters are featured prominently.
For an alphabet DVD I would recommend Richard Scarry ABC or Learning Songs instead of this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Minding your Rs. Jan. 13 2004
Format:VHS Tape
Our son has been singing the alphabets since he was 18 months, but we wanted him to become familiar with associating the names of the letters with what they look like. I loved Sesame Street as a child, so we hoped this video would be a good introduction. For his short attention span this movie does a good job at keeping him interested. We like the short skits about some of the letters--they're pretty creative and catchy. However, we were really annoyed that baby bear couldn't say his "R"s. Especially when our son, who is 3 1/2 with excellent vocabulary and word pronunciation, started saying words without the Rs after seeing the video for the first time. After some explaining he started saying his Rs again, but he still 'slips' into baby bear talk now and again. I'm disappointed that a movie that is supposed to be focussing on the alphabet can't even teach the correct pronunciation of a letter that so many children have a difficult time pronouncing anyway. I feel it's poor planning that the main character is not able to say his Rs--repeatedly and annoyingly. Although I give it an A for having creative ways of teaching/introducing letters and being able to keep a 3-year-old's attention, I give it a D for teaching incorrect letter pronunciation and the failure to accurately present what the movie is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Nov. 17 2003

My son loves this dvd. I bought it when he was 25-26 months and have played it just about everyday since (he's 30 months now). He learned his ABC's from it and dances to it. Like the others, he loves the individual segments, e.g., G ..., F faces and the jungle part.
Before this purchase and over the last few months I purchased other DVD's but after their initial viewing, he wouldn't want to see them again. For example, I have baby einstein dvds, and several Elmo dvd's. I also have Ernie's Count-with-me (he'd watch this one occasionally).
In my opinion, this ABC video is the best children's video out there. Before he could say his ABCs, I'd just point out the colors and we'd say them together. We'd also dance together. (Thus, there are different levels of learning involved and physical activity). Now, when I play it, sometimes he sits and watches the whole thing, singing and dancing along with it, other times he like to hear it playing in the background, so he can tune in to his favorite parts.
This video is worth every penny. Just be prepared for continuous play, but it won't drive you crazy because the tunes are very catchy and fun.
ps. After several months of continued requests for "baby bear" aka "SS Do the alphabet", I finally found a runner up, "kids" aka "Daddy Day Care"

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST! Feb. 21 2002
By Kerry
Format:VHS Tape
My 3 year old and I love this video. My sister purchased it about four years ago for my nephew. She passed it down to me once my nephew no longer needed it and believe me when I say I have become eternally grateful. You will find this video very cute as you watch Baby Bear dodge the "Nosey Posey" Goldilocks to say the Alphabet without her assistance. I found it hilarious that Baby Bear could not say the whole alphabet but used the word REGRESSED correctly in a sentence. (This video helped to make Baby Bear one of my favorite Sesame Street characters)
This video is great. Not only does it teach the Alphabet, but I also found that the songs that are sung for certain letters are the letters that my three-year old had a hard time remembering...UNTIL THIS VIDEO!!! Songs range from, "Alphabet Jungle", "Let's Sing a Song about J", and "The D Song". My son sings along to all the songs, he even gets up to do the Alphabet Exercises!!
I would recommend this video to any and every parent of a young child. Not only is it educational and fun, but it will also give us parents 40 minutes of peace!!!
* I also recommend Richard Scary's Best Learning Video Ever, and Sesame Street: Learning About Numbers*

Did you have to learn Microsoft Excel for your job? How about German in high school? Ever try to memorize poems? Not easy, are they? Think about these things and then ponder the challenge of having to learn not these skills, but the basic underlying tool that enables you to learn any of them, or most anything else - the alphabet. The cornerstone of all our transmitted knowledge, we expect our two and three year olds to learn it without being able to read it or even comprehend its significance. That's why we should all be eternally thankful for Jim Henson, the Children's Television Workshop, and that sage of linguistic prowess Big Bird and his eager student Baby Bear.
Like Virgil leading Dante through the existing cosmos, Big Bird guides the lost and forlorn Baby Bear around the obstacle of the Leonine Goldilocks and brings him safely to the blessed seat of knowledge itself, the comprehension of the English alphabet. Along their journey, Baby Bear also learns much wisdom that will come to his rescue when tested - imagination, visualization, association of ideas, and the ability of music to convey information that mere words alone cannot. It is truly a tale of grand adventure and spectacular achievement. More than even that, it's cute.
All kidding aside, at twenty-one months, our daughter has already worn out her "Do the Alphabet" VHS tape, so we sought out and purchased the DVD. That alone should tell you just how enjoyable this program is. We try to buy her programs that will be enjoyable as well as educational so she will grow with the idea that learning and enjoyment can and should go together. Bob the Builder, Veggie Tales, and the cornerstone of them all, Sesame Street are all part of her growing collection.
