  • An animated rendition of Dr. Seuss's classic book about the threat of industrialization to nature, The Lorax opens in Thneedville--a town never depicted in the original book. Thneedville is an artificial place, made primarily from plastic. It sports inflatable trees, fast cars, and air quality so poor that the residents are forced to purchase bottled fresh air. In another new twist to the story, 12-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) discovers that his crush Audrey (Taylor Swift) wants nothing more than to see a long-extinct Truffula Tree, so he sets out to impress her by finding one. Since there are no real trees in Thneedville, Ted acts on the crazy stories of his grandmother (Betty White), venturing beyond the city's walls into the desolate wasteland to locate a mysterious creature called the Once-ler (Ed Helms). Here the story and animation begin to more closely follow the book. Ted discovers the grumpy recluse, who reluctantly begins to tell him a tale about a once-perfect landscape filled with beautiful Truffula Trees and cute frolicking animals--a landscape now decimated by one greedy young man's insatiable appetite for profit. The beauty and wonder of the Truffula forest and its creatures are right out of Dr. Seuss's illustrations. While the forest creatures may not be directly referred to as Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans, and Humming-Fish, the cute little bears, funny-looking ducks, and especially charming trio of singing fish are instantly recognizable. They serve, as they do in Dr. Seuss's book, to add just the right amount of humor and levity to what would otherwise be a pretty heavy-handed message from the Lorax (Danny DeVito) about environmental preservation. Ted's hormonal instincts to impress Audrey slowly begin to take a back seat to the plight of the lost trees and animals, and the Once-ler's assertion that "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better" rings true by the end of the film. The abundance of original music is a nice and unexpected addition to the story, though why neither Efron nor Swift actually gets to sing is perplexing. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

The following review is based on the 2D version:

    VIDEO:

Dr. Seuss's The Lorax arrives at blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 1.85:1 encode. Although it isn't a Pixar grade presentation, nevertheless, this transfer is still a vivid success. Colour quality is particularly outstanding and punchy, with the rampant oranges, yellow and blues, popping off the screen. Sharpness and fine details are also very striking and clean. Black levels are inky and consistent from start to finish. (5/5)

    AUDIO:

This DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound mix is exceptional and an all-out stunner. Dialogue is clear and audible throughout, and the design of this lossless presentation engages surrounds exceptionally well, lending the movie an enveloping, engaging presence that is really impressive. Fidelity is sensationally dynamic, and high- and low-ends are replicated firmly and convincingly. The voices of various characters are also well chosen and simply outstanding: Danny DeVito (The Lorax), Ed Helms (The Once-ler), Zac Efron (Ted), the lovely Taylor Swift (Audrey) and Betty White (Grammy Norma). (5/5)

    STORYLINE:

A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

    TRIVIA:

The Lorax has an estimated budget of $70 million, but grossed $312 million worldwide.

The characters of Ted and Audrey are named after Dr. Seuss (whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel) and his second wife Audrey Geisel.

This is the first film to feature Universal's 100th Anniversary logo.

Did you know that despite being the two main characters of the film, The Lorax and Ted never appear in a scene together.

    PACKAGING:

The 3D version has a lenticular cover, which is very well designed. There are 3 discs: Disc 1: Blu ray 3D feature film with bonus features in HD; Disc 2: Blu ray 2D feature film with bonus features in HD: Disc 3: DVD feature film with bonus features. Digital Copy is also included.

    PRICING:

When The Lorax blu ray release was first announced, the price was $34.99. Then, it went up to $37.49, down to $29.99. Finally, it has dropped to $24.99, the same for 3D and regular 2D sets. Of course, I chose the 3D version. This is a price that I just cannot resist. Buy it before the price goes up again, like the earlier release of Star Wars. (Note: since it was released, the price for the 3D set has gone up to $29.99)

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

Dr. Seuus' The Lorax is a wonderful movie with top-notched audio/video transfer. The most outstanding aspect is its colours that simply pop off the screen. There are a couple goofy bonus shorts that the kiddies (and young at heart) will enjoy. Currently, at the price of $24.99, what are you waiting for? (Sorry, since I wrote the review, the price has gone up to $29.99...update: $31.49 now). But this set is still highly recommended.

I hope the above review is helpful to you.
