The venerable Chinese folktale about identical brothers with remarkable powers here gets graphic-novel treatment. Its previous versions have been set in China, where the siblings run afoul of the emperor, but now the family immigrates to gold-rush California to escape warring factions trying to enlist them during the Taiping Rebellion. The unusual locale adds conflict and commentary, as the previously established townspeople react with xenophobia and violence when they discover the brothers' strange abilities. Tragic events lead to an ending that's grimmer than Grimm (the brothers told a similar fairy tale), though a modern-day framing sequence adds hope. Grecian imaginatively imparts a contemporary sensibility to the legendary tale, and illustrator Rossmo's tone is decidedly different from the whimsy of picture-book versions. Loosely expressionist black-and-white wash drawings accentuate the story's drama, not its humor. The temptation to turn the family into a superhero team is admirably resisted. Come to think of it, however, with their elasticity, impenetrable skin, and other peculiarities, the seven sons would fit right in with the comics' costumed crime fighters. Gordon Flagg

Seven identical Chinese brothers come to America during the Gold Rush of the 1850s. When two children fall through an iced-over river, Brother Number One tries to save them by breathing the entire river into his mouth. But he can't hold it long enough for them to get to safety and lets the water go, accidentally drowning the children. When a mob of angry townspeople tries to retaliate, each of Number One's brothers takes his place, using their remarkable abilities each time to save his life.

Thoughtful and smart,

I was familiar with the legend of the seven sons, one of whom accidentally commits a crime and finds himself saved through the intervention of his super-heroic brothers, but nothing prepared me for the emotional thoughtfulness of this comic book.In this first major published work, these two creators weave a skillful and tight story about racism in the old West. The relationship between the super-powerful family and the prospectors and gunslingers that antagonize them is tinged with danger and enriched by spectacle. A very good book, worthy of greater attention.

I picked up Seven Sons last week and was blown away. Rossmo's art just jumps off the page. It really draws you into the story and I'm sure we're going to be hearing big things from him in a couple years. It's a perfect compliment to Grecian's storytelling. I can't wait to see more from both of these creators. Hopefully there will be a follow-up to find out what happens next to the Seven Sons.
