Book Description

February 2002
Anna Matthews left home at eighteen, a young woman rooted in small-town virtues, seeking adventure in the Green Mountains of Vermont. She found a free-spirited young man whose boundless imagination captivated her heart. Forced apart, Anna tries to build a new life. A decade later, a series of gripping novels awaken Anna’s veiled dreams, illuminating a striking disparity within her marriage. She seeks the author, but the truth she discovers will change her life. Anna is confronted with a clear choice--continue living the comfortable, but hollow American Dream or pursue her dream.

In his auspicious debut, Kirk Martin paints a love story that is at once soaring and bittersweet. Shade of the Maple captures the subtle, yet powerful nuances that distinguish mere romance from intimacy. An intimacy that is powerful, moving and unforgettable.

Kirk Martin is donating $1.00 from every purchase of Shade of the Maple to Friends You Can Count On to develop an earlier detection blood test for breast cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS AUTHOR March 2 2004
By A Customer
I have a new favorite author and I am writing a review for every one of his books on every site that I can! I stared by reading his first book; Shade of the Maple that book touched me so deeply and in so many ways. Then I ordered his next title, Gravel Drive, this book made me sob uncontrollably. Both books have changed me, for the better. One day I was looking around to see if Kirk Martin had anything else published. I found his website [...] lucky for me he just released his third book, Gifted. I just finished reading it last night. It was just as good, if not better than the other two titles. What I like most about the three books is that each one of them was truly different. Many authors stick with the same genre, Kirk Martin took some risks and they turned out fabulously. Take some time and read each one of these books, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific author and person! Dec 8 2003
Having read all of Kirk Martin's books (now numbering 3), I can tell you that each of Kirk Martin's books offers a different view into the human soul. I recently hosted a book-signing party for Kirk Martin and I can tell you from personal experience that he is as interesting a person as his books are to read. Shade of the Maple is a fresh look at an old subject...romance. The Gravel Drive is a look into a father's soul and Gifted is a look at how people who are "different" are not always bad. Gifted, his newest offering (available only on his website in limited edition) is just another example of his multi-faceted talent.I hope you will take the time to read some or all of Kirk Martin's literary offerings. I am a devoted fan and I hope you will be too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Club Favorite Dec 3 2003
Our Book Club read Shade of the Maple for our October selection since the author donates proceeds to breast cancer research. We loved this book!! The characters felt like my neighbors and I could identify with Anna's struggles. It is warm and intimate and I love the descriptive writing, makes you feel like you're roaming the Vermont countryside with them. It's a month later and I find myself still thinking about these characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Insight Nov. 25 2003
Deeply moving. I first read The Gravel Drive by Kirk Martin and was amazed by the depth of insight and emotion he lets bleed onto the pages of his books. It's like he is not afraid to bare his own soul in writing these stories, and perhaps that is why they are so powerful. I read at kirkmartinbooks.com accounts of how he wrote the stories, and he is very unique. I then picked up Shade of the Maple, and was amazed once again. Partly by the intimacy he captured in such subtle ways between a man and woman, but also by the way he understands relationships. It is subtle and it is deep. Also saw on his site that he has another new one on the way that is again very different. I like it that he doesn't use a cookie cutter approach to writing, but instead follows his passions. And his heart - the donations to charity are icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Beautiful Story Nov. 16 2003
Shade of the Maple is beautiful in every way. I opened this book and was drawn to the characters immediately, I couldn't put it down and missed them when it was over. I do hope the author writes a sequel! The settings are beautifully described and the love story is one-in-a-million. If you like Nicholas Sparks, you will love this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new favorite... Nov. 10 2003

I can't say enough great things about this book, these characters or this author.
The story had me hooked right from the start. The characters are genuine and I cared about them from the beginning. I love Mr. Martin's descriptive writing style. I also appreciate the fact that he donates a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research. By buying this book not only will you get a great story you will also be supporting a worthy charity.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Felt this Deeply Oct. 26 2003
I absolutely loved this book. From the very first word, I was drawn into the story, and before I knew it I had turned the last page. Then I wished it hadn't ended. I miss the characters already because I felt like I had come to know them so well, and I really felt for them. Maybe it's because I could relate to Anna so well - I've felt what she felt, had the same conversations in my head, experienced the same longings. To me, it was a beautiful story that I will read often.

1.0 out of 5 stars What great love story? Oct. 25 2003
I agree that this book was a major disappointment. I didn't feel any great connection, and felt this was not a great love story. I kept waiting for more dialogue, but kept getting more and more description of Vermont! For only 213 pages, this book dragged on and on and I felt it was taking forever to get through. Plus, I just kept waiting for it to get better, and it just never did. I'm still tempted to try his "Gravel Drive" but this book has made me very leery to try anymore of his novels.--Monica Petersen
