Every now and then a book and an author come along that blow me away. I just read both SHADE OF THE MAPLE and THE GRAVEL DRIVE...and I can't stop thinking about the characters and their stories. I searched through kirkmartinbooks.com, hoping he had another book coming soon..and he has signed copies available of GIFTED.
"Gifted is a timeless story of love, courage and redemption. In the shadow of New Hampshire's granite hills, three people with little in common find their lives indelibly intertwined.Devan McAllister is a misunderstood seventeen-year-old, a thorn to those frustrated by his ADD, yet content within. Devan lives life on the fringes of high school by choice, but suddenly finds himself at the center of a life-changing struggle. He begins to hear classmates' thoughts and feel their emotions. Devan must choose whether to embrace his gift or run from it. An intricately woven story with richly drawn characters, Gifted reminds us that true love is selfless, and that our weaknesses are often our greatest gifts."
Can't wait to read it!

Kirk Martin is one of those rare authors who digs beneath the surface of the human heart and reaches down to that place inside where your soul resides. Shade of the Maple is one of those rare books that lived up to the promise of the first few words and will be read often. I experience new depths of wisdom every time I reread it. There were several lines that made me wonder if Kirk Martin was inside my head---one in particular that made me catch my breath to have my feelings articulated so clearly. I read the excerpt for his new book at thegraveldrive.com and felt absorbed into the drama of this father and his son. I applaud Kirk Martin for having the courage to venture into a new genre and capture the transformation of a father's relationship with his son. THE GRAVEL DRIVE is even more compelling than his first work, which I thought impossible to achieve. But he somehow reached deep inside to reveal a measure of his soul that will leave you absolutely stunned upon reading this story. Every parent should read The Gravel Drive. I agree with other reviewers. Kirk Martin has a unique gift to lift the human spirit and make hearts better.

When I first heard of Kirk Martin and Shade of the Maple, I was a little skeptical. I had read so many reviews of how wonderful the book was that I actually felt that it couldn't possibly stand up to my expectations or my scrutiny. Within a few days, I found myself reading the last page with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. Kirk has done what so many others have tried - come close to, and more times than not, failed at. He has brought a believable story of true love to his readers. Most of us fancy ourselves to be as strong as the characters in Maple, but when we watch these remarkable people come to life, we realize we are witnessing something remarkable. I have been blessed to have once experienced a love similar to what Mr. Martin writes about, and with it, a devastating loss. As the days came and went since, hope disappeared with them - until I read Shade of the Maple. Thank you to Kirk Martin for reminding me why we experience love and show me that as long as there is hope in your heart, there is always a chance of finding ones soul.

I absolutely loved Shade of the Maple and could not put it down! Anna was very real to me, and I became totally absorbed into her story as if it were my own. Kirk Martin has a gift for writing such moving, inspiring stories with great depth. Fortunately, I just found out he has a new novel on the way soon called The Gravel Drive, which sounds very powerful:
The Gravel Drive is a metaphor for the connection between a father and his son. Nightmare becomes reality when the boy is discovered missing. At a detective's urging, the father keeps a journal to record thoughts that may provide clues to finding his son. In these pages we witness a man's transformation, as introspection exposes pretense and truth yields understanding of what it is to be a father. Penetrating insight into human nature (and the thoughts that plague the parents of missing children) under girds the drama of the search for a little boy... last seen walking down the gravel drive. It is this search that ultimately leads to discovery of life's greatest truth: there can be no love without sacrifice, no redemption without loss.
I can't wait to read this, too!

Read the Prologue. If you like this author's sweeping, poetic style and a story told with that rare touch of idealistic innocence and belief in pure love...you will absolutely love Shade of the Maple. If you are cynical that such wholesome and wonderfully innocent love remains, then you should probably skip this novel. It has been likened on the cover to Brides of Madison County. It is, in fact, much better. The characters are eminently real, a reflection of most of us who struggle to make our good relationships great, who search for that special conection because we know it exists. Shade of the Maple captures that connection like no one I have read before. This is not the story of some romantic weekend fling between a bored housewife and roving photographer--this is a story of timeless love, of commitment, of a devotion that lasts a lifetime and is as deep as one's soul can go. For those who know that this kind of love exists, who have tasted of it, Kirk Martin will look deep into your soul and reach you in places you have not felt emotion before.
