Book Description

I was born in a world ruled by gods.
This worked out well for me, as I am a god.
For centuries we were the rulers of our worlds.
But things changed.
Now, the stakes are high.
Let the games begin. . . .

Caught in an ancient rivalry not of their making, on an earth devoid of all other humans, a group of teens learns they are avatars of immortal gods, put on earth in a form that’s only too mortal. Now they are bound to fight one another—and only one of them can survive.

Do they resist the forces controlling them and unite to save themselves and perhaps even return to their own time? Or can one of them win this battle and seize immortality and the life of a god?

Tui T. Sutherland ups the ante in this second volume of her witty and absorbing fantasy trilogy about life, immortality, and what it means to live among the gods—and to do their dirty work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shadow Falling Review, April 17 2008
By JWH - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Avatars, Book Two: Shadow Falling (Hardcover)
Tui Sutherland is a fiction writer who provides a good story in Shadow Falling which is the sequel to So This Is How It Ends. In addition to the great story, the reader is shown that much more can be accomplished by working together as a team than by oneself.
Tui Sutherland was born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 31, 1978. She has lived all over the world. She lives in Boston. Sutherland is also the author of the book This Must Be Love. As seen in this book, she likes lost civilizations.
Sutherland thickens the original plot by introducing not one, but two new main characters bringing the total to six. Even though this is more main characters than in some books, Sutherland pulls this feat off very well. Each chapter is told through one or two of the characters' views. It is never confusing on who was telling the story, or what was going on. Throughout the story, the main characters work together which conveys the importance of teamwork.
The only part that was a little disappointing was there seemed to be a little too many plot twists and mystery. At one point a double of one of the characters is introduced, claiming to be the real person. But the reader never finds out who the real person is and who the double is! Also, though plot twists can be very interesting, there is one too many of them in this book that can confuse the reader to what exactly are happening. When all is said and done, this book is very entertaining. It has action, but not overwhelming so. It has enough calmer parts to let the reader catch up, but not that much so the book gets boring. With action in one part followed up with a bit of drama the next, this book would please almost any type of reader. Anyone can pick up this book, without even reading the first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good follow up; can't wait for #3!, Oct 5 2008

This review is from: Avatars, Book Two: Shadow Falling (Hardcover)
I have really enjoyed this series! It's written where it's geared more toward teens, but it has plenty of adult content to keep you interested (I'm 27 and I read it in about a day). It focuses around ancient gods and mythology, but in the perspective of teens. The author just has a really down to earth way of writing that I just really love!

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect blend of mystery, mythology, and fantasy, Feb 28 2011

This review is from: Avatars, Book Two: Shadow Falling (Hardcover)
This second book in the Avatars series picks up right where the first book ended. Tigre, Diana, and Kali have just found out that they are avatars, the reincanations of gods and are expected to fight to the death to determine who will rule the world, while Gus discovers that the Polynesian pantheon has inserted Oro, the god of war inside him. Three new avatars also arrive in New York, Thor, Anna and Ereka. Some of the avatars eagerly jump into battle, while others want to try to find a way to escape the gods and get back to their own time.
Some mysteries from the first book are answered while others are raised. A mysterious god, who narrates some sections of the book, reveals that he was behind many of the events in the story, including Gus's participation in the contest. This book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you dying to know what happens next and wondering who the mysterious god actually is.
