Grade 4-6-- The Fomoiri, beings of darkness with eyes like mirrors reflecting light, are about to unleash their malevolent power upon an unsuspecting world. Only two frightened children, Rick and Moira, and a small band of the Tuatha De Danaan (found in ancient Irish legends) oppose them. Readers not yet ready for the epic sweep of Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper, Patricia McKillip or Ursula LeGuin will be drawn into this version of the never-ending contest between good and evil forces. The children's awareness of their parents' anguish at their prolonged absence in the Middle Kingdom is refreshing and lovingly resolved. Wisely, the children's language remains consistent, and does not take on the formal cadence of high fantasy speech. In addition, the dialect is smoothly integrated into the text, and a short glossary is provided. Children who enjoyed McGowen's "Magician" trilogy (Lodestar) will like this book, and the jacket's depiction of a gallant unicorn being attacked by an iridescent green dragon will attract new readers. --Holly Sanhuber, Muskego Public Library, WI
