Jamaican-born Jarvis Church (born Gerald Eaton) is actually one of half of Track & Field, the production team responsible for Nelly Furtado’s breakout debut. In addition to his obvious production skills, this multi-talented artist was also previously the lead vocalist for the Philosopher Kings in the early ’90s. Back in the mix and dropping his own debut (another Track & Field production), Church is looking for a taste of the same success he helped Furtado achieve. And, in fact, he has even enlisted Furtado’s aid on the sexy “Fine Line.” Not that Church needs much help. Shake it Off is an old-school, soulful pop album reminiscent of Lenny Kravitz’s early work, but with a slightly updated sound. Thankfully, though, Church keeps that sound organic, not trying to dilute the soul and emotion with pointless, booming hip-hop beats. There’s even an occasional smoky guitar solo, like on the sultry “That Old Love Song.” But this album is all about Church’s ample talents as a singer/songwriter. His Motown-inflected croon is strong and sweet, a joyous outpouring of emotion. Shake it Off is a remarkable debut, but considering Church’s track record, it’s not too surprising that he achieved so much his first time out. --Adem Tepedelen

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly realized classic R&B Jun 20 2005

Jarvis Church (aka. Gerald Eaton, formerly of The Philosopher Kings and the Co-Producer whiz behind both of Nelly Furtado's albums) simply made the Summer of 2002 for my ears when I first heard promos of "Shake it Off" bubbling out of the radio as I drove through the streets of Toronto (his Monkier comes from an intersection near where he lived in the City at that time - Javis and Church Streets). I picked up the release on it's first day and it did not dissapoint. From the deep groove of the title track; the classic Track & Field intricacy of "Who Will Be Your Man"; the simple, beautiful and romantic, 'That Old Love Song"; and on throughout the entire release - there isn't a track that dissapoints. Highlights include the tunes mentioned above, "Run for Your Life" (featuring Esthero's breakout rap), "Last Night Ever" and "She Kills Like a Soldier".

RCA really messed up the promotion of this release in the US, but you still have a chance to learn what a lot of Canadians and a select few in the US know - Jarvis Church has created R&B for the ages with "Shake it Off."

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD! April 26 2003
By Lauren A. Saul - Published on Amazon.com

Jarvis Church's "Shake it Off" is just one of those CD's that really stand out. I first heard of him, when I was living in NY, and I'm desperately trying to get his name out down south. Church's CD has so much variety on it, and I thoroughly enjoy his debut with another awesome Canadian Nelly Furtado. All of his songs have an amazing beat, whether they are fast, or have a slower soulful sound. He is the only one I know of that can infuse pop, r&b and soul together and do it well. He is original, and really catchy. His Jamaican roots are obvious in the CD as well. I strongly recommend "Shake it off" and I know there is more great stuff to come from Jarvis Church.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good CD, lots of variety Oct 12 2002

Congrats to Jarvis on his debut CD.
An excellent melange of several genres of music.
I would classify most of his music as slow to fast pop.
Nothing too R&B or hip-hop, although the publicity
for his CD might allude to it. A touch of Reggae
in one of his tracks but that's about it.
I especially liked tracks 4-6, 11, and 13.
Jarvis (who was lead singer for the Philosopher Kings
back in the '90s) was highly undersold, especially in Canada
where he is from. Part of this, I believe, is from marketing himself as a rookie (with a new name) as opposed to a veteran with plenty of past successes and the producer behind Nelly Furtado. (his real name is Gerald Eaton, by the way)
Despite the lagging sales, I think it was an excellent CD
and worth a listen.
