Few young bands have embraced classic rock as fully as the Black Crowes. Their debut album features a bar-band stomp rooted in the back catalogs of the Rolling Stones, Free, the Faces, any number of early-'70s hard rockers. The secret of their success has been singer Chris Robinson's lanky rock-star poses matched with a voice as raw as whisky and as inviting as velvet. Add a healthy rhythm section accentuated by producer (and Rick Rubin protégé) George Drakoulias and you've got the dynamic shuffle of their hits ("Jealous Again" and the title track). While the band clearly likes to party, they're even more convincing as the Sunday-morning comedown of "She Talks to Angels." --Rob O'Connor

WOW!!! I can't believe that you don't have this CD in your collection! This is a MUST HAVE! The whole CD is filled with GREAT tracks. Even if you only know one Black Crowes song.. "Jealous Again" or "She Talks To Angels", you will soon love the entire CD with great songs as "Sister Luck", "Hard To Handle", "Twice as Hard", "Could I've Been So Blind", "Seeing Things", and the list goes on... If you don't have this CD... Get IT! You will LOVE IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great CD July 7 2004
Format:Audio CD
Each track on this album is excellent, with a couple classics. It's an album that has aged extremely well, and the Crowes' raw, and at this point unrefined, energy comes through loud and clear. Ultimately, this is purist rock, with the only hint of any pandering to the masses in "Hard To Handle". Top tracks are "Could I've Been So Blind" and "She Talks To Angels". The band was obviously enjoying their work on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Never Topped This June 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
This hard rockin' southern style band charged out of the music scene in 1991, just when grunge was beginning to bust. Although some of their later stuff is good, they never topped this one. Every one of these songs has just a great sound, a feel that makes you want to sing along. Some of the songs are really weird, like Sister Luck and She Talks To Angels. Although their cover of Otis Redding's Hard To Handle is good, it's not the best on the album and I feel is a little overrated. This is a great bet for fans of 90's hard rock or maybe southern hard rock like ZZ Top and Lynryd Skynyrd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good debut, but it wore on me. April 29 2004
Format:Audio CD
This was a good debut from a promising band, but to be honest after a few plays I felt like I heard all I needed to hear. Hearing "Hard to Handle" on the radio way before they got popular was a breath of fresh air, but after a while this record got old to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Hard Rock Record April 28 2004
Format:Audio CD
I think this album is pretty cool. It mainly hard-southern rock n roll. Quite a few of the songs on here are famous. Since this was 1991, and the horrible grunge era was beginning, it's pretty hard to believe that a Aerosmith-y kind of band like this waould have a #5 album on the Billboard chart. it was quite influential and we wouldn't have the wonderful band Jet today if it weren't for these guys. It's really more of a 3.5 album. I'd reccomend it to fans of Jet or UYI-era GNR.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums form the 1990's! April 11 2004

The Black Crows got it right with Shake Your Money Maker, this is one of the best rock and roll albums I have ever heard, to me they are a mix between The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, the two greatest bands of all time, and they fuesed them together to make a killer band. The Robinson brothers are a killer team, even if they cant stand each other!
Every song is good from start to finish, killer vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Raw rock and roll with killer amounts of energy! 'Too Hard To Hande' Their signature song, killer Otis Rush cover and in my openion better then the original. 'She Talks To Angles' is the best song The Black Crows ever made, its a sweet ballad with beautiful lyrics and great musicianship. As for th erest of the album all the songs are good like I said but these are my favorites off the album.
There was like four top ten hits off Shake Your Money maker but the album is more then that and this is one of the best albums you will ever hear and you are really missing ouy if you dont have it yet! Highly recomended!

4.0 out of 5 stars OPUS ONE Jan. 25 2004
Format:Audio CD
I don't remember having heard anything by the Black Crowes in 1990, the year SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER was released. I've ordered this CD after having read that the music of this band should please a fan of ZZ TOP, one of my favorite bands. I'm not disappointed.
It's absolutely true that my first thought while listening to the CD was that I was in the presence of another Rolling Stones clone. Guitar riffs à la Keith Richards, a ballad in the style of "Angie" and a good combination between the piano and the other instruments. Then I've remarked that I was listening more and more often to the CD in my car and that the music was still very good. I really liked it !
A CD to be rediscovered.
