Book Description

July 15 2001
Each day, every day, people with Parkinson disease awaken, trapped in their bodies. They move slowly, their limbs are stiff, their hands shake, and their legs won't follow their brains. For these people, there is hope and help, both offered in this important new book. Shaking Up Parkinson Disease: Fighting Like a Tiger, Thinking Like a Fox explains Parkinson - how it's recognized, what causes it, who gets it, when and how to get help, and much more. Using patient case studies, facts about the disease, a survey that assesses quality of life, and Biblical references, the author shows how patients at all stages of the disease can maintain their quality of life. Celebrities who either have Parkinson or who have family members with Parkinson also contribute their personal, inspirational stories about coping with the disease. Product Description

From Library Journal

It is estimated that 1.2 million people in North American have Parkinson's disease (PD), including actor Michael J. Fox. Lieberman, the national medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation, has written a sympathetic book aimed at answering the questions posed by patients and families dealing with this dreadful disease. He covers anatomy and chemistry changes, diagnostic tests, the autonomic nervous system, and how PD affects the body and the mind. Especially good is the section on anxiety and depression as a biological rather than a psychological symptom of the disease. Lieberman explains PD symptoms, considering why they occur, what can be done medically to treat them, and steps the patient can take to alleviate them. He also details the drugs and surgery used to treat the disease and lists disorders that can mimic PD. Finally, Lieberman offers questionnaires that will help patients measure personal mobility, emotion, quality of life, and more. Though some readers may find the religious quotes off-putting, this book's readability and concrete tips make it better than William Weiner's Parkinson's Disease (LJ 5/15/01). An excellent addition to consumer health collections. Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL

1.0 out of 5 stars don't waste your $ if you expect title to be true! May 18 2005
By S. J. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
as a recently diagnosed parkinson disease person, i have read and re-read everything i could get from pd foundations on symptons, treatments and what to expect with pd. the title of this book, "shaking up parkinson disease - fighting like a tiger, thinking like a fox" led me to believe that the famous dr.lieberman would be revealing actions and stragegies not previously printed on dealing with and CURING pd. the title is misleading...contents are almost word for word from his "100 questions & answers about parkinson disease," which i found well organized and quite useful. why were relatives of pd patients interviewed when there are approximately 1 1/2 million

people WITH pd? [whose views are highly valued by me]. i was offened as the good doctor and a-l-l of his famous family interviewes promoted the bible as part of the cure and spouted

endless quotes from it. while spiritual growth may play a part in dealing with this disease, it is incorrect to promote one faith's book of books as part of the actual cure! purchasers would be better served had the dr. shared proactive ways to participate in finding the cure and left his religous beliefs for a book on faith!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Heloful, Informative Book Sep 1 2006
By Alice Crooker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Anyone with Parkinslon's disease as well as their caretaker should appreciate this book. It is well-written and empathethic. Dr. Abe Liebberman has answered questions I have had about the baffling condition and it is unfortunate that we do not have more doctors with his knowledge and expertise in America today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaking up parkinson disease Aug 29 2009
By S. Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book for my mother who is suffering from parkinson disease. She can easily read this book and understand the terminology...not over her head. She is much more content in understanding what is happening to her body and what she can do to help herself now.
