As a long-time Santana fan, I was thrilled to learn Shape Shifter would be a departure from his previous albums which consisted primarily of collaborations with contemporary pop artists.
On this album, all but one track is instrumental, placing Carlos' guitar back in the forefront where it belongs.
I believe this is his best album in perhaps the last 25 or 30 years.

On this album, Carlos at times seems to venture into areas of unfamiliarity. If you are looking for Santana of the past, you won't really find it here. a few songs are raunchy but pale with his other previous hits. All in all though, I would purchase again since I like progressive music.
Update: after listening to this for several months now, I have to bump it up to 4,1/2 Stars. I really like it.

I'm thrilled that Santana has come out with this CD. Don't get me wrong. I do feel happy for the success he had with Supernatural, but that created a whole new fan base with more commercial demands. I was afraid the Santana I grew up with in the 70's and 80's was gone forever... until this release! This is about as close to getting that guy back as I've seen in a long time. I've missed this. It's going to get some heavy rotation from me! ;-) If you are a fan of the pre-Supernatural Santana, you'll want it too.

I had ordered this CD for my husband for his Birthday It is ok not as good as we expected.

Loved the last half
This is a mostly instrumental record with only one song having a singer. The first part of the lp is odd and different from Santana's usual stuff. Read more
