Book Description

An exploration of the shamanic practice of shape shifting and the story of how learning these techniques helped the author transform from corporate executive to environmental activist. Many indigenous cultures have known the art of shapeshifting: the actual transformation of a human being into another living creature. Lakota Sioux warriors would shapeshift into buffalo to become better hunters and to honor the animal, and Andean shamans transform into plants from the jungle to learn healing power. In this book, author John Perkins examines these ancient shamanic practices and reveals the mental techniques that enable an individual to merge with another living creature. Shapeshifting is also the story of the author's transformation from a corporate utility executive to an environmental activist. oints: Examining the shamanic techniques of "becoming the other" from different cultures, the author shows how it is within the capability of anyone to transform themselves on this deep level and achieve a true unity with all things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary for our time, Dec 18 2002

John Perkins is a revolutionist. With his keen awareness he took the example of 'primative' people's culture to learn what life is truly about. In the book he talks about being able to transform, or 'shapeshift' yourself and your community to what you would like it to be. All of his books are excellent and if you are really interested in learning more, he has apprentiship programs available. I am working with him personally right now in one of his programs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye opening and thought provoking, May 30 2002

This review is from: Shape Shifting (Paperback)
This book covers two areas that are important to me: Environmentalism and Spiritualism. It is a autobiography of one mans journey to learn to shapechange and how he comes out of it understanding the importance of changing the community around him. A book about a life story, about some tribal beliefs, not a book on technique.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN ENGAGING STORY ABOUT SHAMANISM, April 15 2002
By
This review is from: Shape Shifting (Paperback)
I admire Mr. Perkins' love for the Earth and he has an important message to share with the world. Many people feel that unless we are able to shift our perceptions, that we will further endanger the Earth and our very existences. His story is engaging and thought provoking. He opens our mind to the unlimited range of possibilities available to all of us. My only complaint is that if one is interested in the pursuit of the path he describes, no real direction is given in this book. For a more practical and hands on approach to shamanism, I would recommend Shaman, Healer, Sage (Alberto Villoldo) and The Path (Esmeralda Arana).
