Seeking refuge from increasingly violent persecution the Family decide to form an alliance with the Avoyelles Empire. Because Avoyelles boasts a large psychic population it seemingly offers the Family a safe haven. In exchange The Family agrees to launch their mercenary fleet against the Empire¡¯s long-time enemy, the Cassasians, who are setting up for an all-out assault.
The deal is sealed with a marriage between Princess Anna of Avoyelles and Jessup, the crown prince of the Ealothian Family. But not all is not as it seems in Avoyelle. Terrorists from radical hate groups have already infiltrated the Empire.
As the Family struggles to deal with the terrorist threat, Jessup leads their fleet into a devastating war.
