Stories Tie Together,
By
This review is from: Sharpshooter in Petticoats (Paperback)
Mandy's scoundrel husband, Sidney Gray, has been dead for a year, but fear and three small children have kept Mandy barricaded on the Montana mountaintop where Sidney had built Gray Tower. The Cooter family has declared a feud against the Grays and, even though Mandy is the fastest and most accurate gunslinger in the west, she refuses to take her children into danger.Until Tom Linscott, whom she's known since arriving in Montana with Sidney, climbs the cliff one starlit night to claim Mandy as his bride. Sparks begin to fly immediately, as Mandy is no push-over. Neither is Tom, who takes Mandy's rifle then casually bundles up the children and begins to ride away, knowing Mandy will follow. As they ride the several day journey to Tom's ranch, he teaches the children to call him Pa, to Mandy's disgust. She's loved Tom much longer than she ought to have, but can't bear to put him in danger from the Cooter feud. For indeed, the Cooters are coming from all across the land to join up and kill off the Grays--and anyone who stands by them. Tom Linscott has bought himself a barrelful of trouble, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Not only the Cooters are coming, but so are Mandy's family, the McLennans, in this final novel in the historical western series Sophie's Daughters. Sharpshooter in Petticoats is not a stand-alone book and (apparently) not only the closing tale to Sophie's Daughters but to two other series Lassoed in Texas and Montana Marriages which I haven't read. As such, things got a bit confusing for me when characters old and new poured onto the stage in the final chapters. Still, Connealy's witty writing style made this a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

Exhausting and Disappointing,
By Gabriele - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sharpshooter in Petticoats (Paperback)
After the very enjoyable (despite its flaws) Petticoat Ranch, I was excited to read the continuing stories of Sophie's daughters. That all three could pick such disappointing men defies the odds, and how all three could have such similar experiences - running from would-be murderers - is also hard to believe and just one more reason to skip these stories. In Sharpshooter, the promising relationship of Mandy and Tom progresses into a tiring and unappealing finish. And you start to think you've read this story before (you have) as the hero and heroine escape those trying to kill them. Although previous characters are brought together, they are not appealing here. Belle - one of my favorite all-time heroines - is grim and unpleasant and unattractive in this episode. Mark Reeves turns out to be a nice, mannerly young man after coming from such a chaotic home background, which is also unbelievable. Also in the deja-vu-all-over-again category, his romance with Emma - love at first sight and immediate marriage no matter what her parents want - is a repeat of sister Lindsay and husband Roy's. I will continue to keep Petticoat Ranch in my library for periodic reading and try to forget the future facing these delightful little girls. One last thought - my favorite book of Mary Conneally's to date is Husband Tree (despite its flaws), and that contained no murderous scenes. Please keep the humor and Christian focus!

Connealy never disapoints!,
By Susan Snodgrass "Book Lover" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sharpshooter in Petticoats (Paperback)
I loved this book! Mary Connealy winds up the epic she started in 'Petticoat Ranch' and I'm so sorry to say goodby to these people. I'm not going to give up any of the plot, but Mandy Gray is a super lady and this book is sad, funny, reverent and absolutely outstanding. Go get it!

Terrific Series Conclusion!,
By Renee Chaw "Black 'n Gold Girl's Book Spot" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sharpshooter in Petticoats (Paperback)
If you like Sophie's Daughters or any of Mary's other historical romance series' you will really enjoy this book especially since (I think) it features every character from Montana Marriages and Lassoed in Texas. Sharpshooter in Petticoats not only gives Mandy the ending she deserves but reunites all the characters we know and love in a fashion that only Mary Connealy can pull off.As a follower of the series I was excited to read Mandy's story. Since having read the fiasco with Sidney in Doctor in Petticoats and pretty much loathing him from the get go I had the feeling he wouldn't be around for the long haul...thank goodness he wasn't! I'm usually pretty quick at figuring things out and becoming attached to certain characters. Sid wasn't one of them. I was hoping that I would be seeing a little more of Tom Linscott and I wasn't dissappointed. When you put two stubborn folks like Mandy and Tom together there's bound to be some friction and boy do the sparks fly. Chaotic, crazy, action-packed, and of course, hilarious this is one book not to be missed. This was the first book I read on my Nook but I enjoyed it so much I plan on getting a "real" copy to put on my bookshelf! *I received my complimentary galley copy through the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for posting my review of the book.* |
