Because let's face it...Shatner does rule, doesn't he?

About the Author

Renowned for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the highly successful Star Trek television series, which is still syndicated in over 100 countries, William Shatner also starred in the television series, T.J. Hooker and appeared in many motion pictures including seven Star Trek movies. Mr. Shatner starred in a ten-part television series for Turner Broadcasting, The Voice of the Planet, which focused on the destruction of the environment, and host Rescue: 911, highlighting emergency services. Born in Montreal where his father was a clothing manufacturer, Mr. Shatner developed an early interest in acting and started working professionally at the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) before he reached his teens. He continued at the CBC throughout his schooling, but entered McGill University with the idea that he might join his father's business. Instead, he was drawn to the theater, and after receiving his degree in business he took the job of assistant manager at the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal. Mr. Shatner soon abandoned the business end of the profession and became an actor with the Canadian Repertory Company in Ottawa. This was followed by his joining the famous Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival under Sir Tyrone Guthrie where he won the Tyrone Guthrie Award for his acting in his third season. While at Stratford, Mr. Shatner renewed his association with the CBC and wrote plays. He then moved to New York and participated in the golden age of live television with appearances on Playhouse 90 and Studio One. He made his film debut in the 1957 production of The Brothers Karamazov, followed by Judgment at Nuremberg, The Intruder and other films. During the early 1960s he had guest roles in many of the top television shows. Star Trek was launched in 1966 and continued as a first-run series through 1969. In addition to his career in television and films, Mr. Shatner is a breeder of quarter horses and has had notable success with the American Saddlebred, developing and owning the world champion, Sultan's Day. He is actively involved in charitable activities for the Juvenile Justice Connection Project, Tourette's Syndrome, the California Endangered Species Campaign and Toys for Tots, and also speaks at Star Trek conventions nationwide. William Shatner divides his time between his ranch in northern California, his horsebreeding interests in Kentucky, and a home in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Hilarious!, Oct 6 2011

This review is from: Shatner Rules: Your Guide to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World at Large (Hardcover)
Shatner Rules, the latest book by William Shatner, is loaded with anecdotes about his life and work. There are humorous "rules" to how he lives his life interspersed throughout. The book is a fantastic read, never boring or plodding. Shatner displays an affable personality, a man able to make fun of himself and his over-the-top, egomaniacal image. His jabs at himself, former co-stars, and Facebook are all fun and worth reading.

Amidst all the humor, though, is a truly inspired message: say yes. Shatner says 'yes' to life, its challenges and opportunities. Sometimes this has made him appear foolish. But, it has also made him a successful and much beloved character on our landscape.

Ignore the serious self-help stuff out there. Pick up Shatner Rules, have a great laugh, and learn some important lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Laughed Out Loud, Oct 11 2011
By Kathy E. Gill - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Shatner Rules: Your Guide to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World at Large (Hardcover)
I love Star Trek, in all its iterations (I petitioned for it to be resurrected back in the day), but I have never read a book about it or by a cast member. I've never even thought about buying a book from William Shatner. But I saw this, it spoke to me, and I bought it ... and am glad I did.

I laughed out loud from start-to-finish. Let me hasten to say that this isn't laughter for laughter's sake. There are sobering places, but in the main it is a celebration of life. Highly recommended, assuming you know enough about Star Trek to get some of the jokes. On the other hand, I've never watched Boston Legal and I got those jokes, so maybe you don't need too much backstory. :-)
