Product Description

From Library Journal

The use of the term sheds in this book's title is a misnomer, given that a dictionary defines sheds as small, rough shacks for storage. Except for a lean-to type wet/dry garbage shed and a firewood shed, the construction plans, directions, and many illustrations in this guide are for attractive and even fancy units ranging from 80 to over 350 square feet. The purposes range from storage, work, and gardening to poolside, boat storage, and pavilion entertaining. After introductory information on designing and building techniques, fairly detailed directions are given for building a basic 8 10 shed. From there on directions are less complete, on the assumption that the builder is experienced or will contract the more difficult work. Suggested only for collections with subject demand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little reference book, Oct 29 2008
By
We bought this book based on the shed on the front cover. I've always wanted to tackle a cordwood masonry project and when my husband suggested buying a shed this summer, I somehow managed to talk him into the idea of building one instead. As far as construction experience, mine is pretty minimal. Like some other reviewers mentioned, the first project in this book (the basic 8x10 shed) is covered in great detail with hardware lists, construction schedules etc. While some of the other projects, including the cordwood masonry shed are rather sparsely covered, we found that most of the construction basics needed for our shed, could be referenced in the first project. I found the illustrations to be a great help. Hardware and construction lists were however lacking.

We built a shed that's very sturdy, gorgeous and a conversation piece for all who see it. I've even had a few requests to build this shed for others. While we couldn't have done it without this book as a reference, we were left to figure out a few things on our own along the way, eg. estimating lumber/logs/mortar required to do the job.

If you're willing to do a bit of pre-work and minor problem solving on your own, great little book! We have a wonderful shed as proof. Would have given this book a five, if the authors had just given a bit more attention to detail in all the book's projects.

Happy Building!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great help and great read, Nov 11 2003

This book was great, fun to read too. It gave plenty of ideas and advice. It wasn't the only book I used when building my shed but, certainly was the one I used the most. I recommend this book for anyone who's never built a shed before.

We bought this book for ideas to help us build a shed in our own back yard, and chose it because of the "natural" looking shed on the cover. The ideas are wonderful, and the plans and pictures are clear.
The details and descriptions of building techniques are helpful. My husband is an experienced builder and was looking for more variety in the plans than the book actually held.
It is exactly what the title states, a do it yourself guide, not a plan book. Ultimately, we chose a plan from another book.
I would highly recommend this book though to someone who has less building experience and is looking for a more basic to moderate, unique shed to build for themselves.
