I have to wonder how many viewers of this movie (very well made even if it was a film essentially made for video rather than for theatre release) have had direct experience with the phenomenon of multiple personality disorder. I have had such experience in my life, most directly for almost a full year, and, to some extent, the film corresponds to my own perception of this weirdness, i.e., THAT IT IS REAL, whether the explanation of it be purely psychological and neurological, occult, spiritual, or a combination of such factors.

For example, the afflicted one's trauma and anguish that occur as one personality gives place to another is part of what I have witnessed numerous times. It is deeply unsettling and frightening, as just about everything to do with this disorder, mental or (as in this film) spiritual, perhaps in both cases supernatural to at least some degree. In the case of a friend (whose case, preserving his anonymity, was thoroughly documented by paranormal researchers and resulted in several theses and dissertations about him, as I eventually was to learn), some of the physical manifestations even went beyond what this film shows. Allied to all of this, as the son of a Portuguese witch, were the extraordinarily vivid powers of E.S.P. and of telekinesis (or psychokinesis) of some of this friend's personalities. Seeing the face change unrecognisably before one's eyes and the body turn, variously, taut or looser upon the bones, the paranormal powers sometimes activate, too, is profoundly shocking to witness, not to mention to hear changes in dialect and in languages that the individual persons speak and/or understand. The changes in personality can be downright frightful.

The film, "Shelter: before He Takes Your Life, He Will Take Your Soul", a.k.a.

Shelter offers good enough entertainment if you like spiritual horror or ghost movies, thanks largely to professional performances by Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. The film offers a creepy enough ambiance and mood to give it a passing grade as an okay ghost movie. However, Shelter is really a third rate version of the excellent film of the genre, The Skeleton Key, starring Kate Hudson. Unlike The Skeleton Key, Shelter has a story in which it is difficult for the viewer to discern character motivations, particularly for those with an evil bent. Both films force the viewer to accept non-sense premises, but at least in The Skeleton Key one is able to at least understand why events are happening.

Shelter confuses the viewer with a mumbo jumbo soup of religious ideas, voodooism, and gnostic notions of an evil and sadistic God who punishes non-believers, though one is never clear as to what a believer is. In fact, the film not only confuses the viewer as to the motivations of certain characters, but is also left with trying to figure out some of the disturbing and nauseous religious philosophy that the film puts forward.

If you are looking for a great horror ghost movie, get The Skeleton Key and shelter yourself from Shelter.

I though that i would give this movie a chance to grow on me but it
sort of fell, way beyond my expectation, for some reason they left one scene
way too long to get back to,and to not even give you a definition has to how
his demise happen,if you're going to bring people into a scene and then leave
them out of it for 35 min.just don't make sense, especially if there're essential
to the movie,so that was a big hole for me to digest, kept waiting for them to get to it,
but it didn't happen,i wonder why this movie has two names, one is Shelter the other
is 6 Souls, both starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeffrey DeMunn,
and here's another movie i could not hear the voices it was so low have to stop buying
poorly done blu-ray.should've know it was going to be,because it went right to blu-ray-dvd.
no time in the theater at all,it was so-so i give 3 stars.
DTS HD Master Audio.audio sound is good but voice not so good.
2.35 LB.,1080p
Runtime 115 minutes.
It's Not Really That Bad.definitely Not Great.
