More questions than anwsers,
This review is from: Shepherding a Child's Heart (Paperback)
I had been considering buying this book for a couple of years, as it has been recommended by Christian families who always seem to have it all together. After finally reading "Shepherding A Child's Heart", I'm left wondering what really happens in those homes. Wow!I have never supported spanking. Lately, I've had a lot of questions arise about Biblical spanking that I have taken to my Pastor, as well as my husband, and both Christian and non-Christian friends. Still, I could not get a simply put, firm anwser on the topic. I was absolutely horrified to read the accounts of spanking in Tedd Tripp's book. The Bible may teach that we are not to spare the rod, etc., but where does it say to pull our kids pants down and spank their bare bottom because they aren't sweet enough yet? Yikes. Glad I don't live in that household. It disturbs me greatly that Tedd Tripp feels spanking to be the only way to correct a disobeying child, and that it must be used immediately after they disobey even once. And spanking an 8 month old baby? I don't even know what to say to that. Overall, I was really looking forward to reading this book, and spanking issues aside, I did find some good information within. I did learn a lot about my childrens behavior, and I will impliment some of the things I learned about correcting that behavior, spankings aside.

I truly love this book & I think it's probably the best parenting book I've ever read, HOWEVER there are 2 things Ted Tripp mentions that I wholeheartedly disagree with. First of all, he claims that God COMMANDS us to spank our children (page 153), which he gets from Proverbs. I don't know about you, but nowhere in my Bible does it say that Proverbs are commands. Proverbs is a book of wisdom & "recommended applications" on how to live a godly life. I do believe that there are consequences to misbehavior (including in my own life!), but that does not always mean a spanking is in order. Sometimes time out works. Or taking away privileges. The other thing I disagree with is that he recommends spanking for EVERY act of disobedience. I think grace MUST be applied every once in a while. After all, I know God gives me ABUNDANT GRACE when I misbehave! As I mentioned earlier, I think 95% of this book is right on target. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that my husband & I are going to start leading a small group on it. But after reading the above issues, I spent LOTS of time on my knees in prayer & time researching this before I knew how I felt. Bottom line is....NO ONE has the right answers for your own parenting. God has given YOU your children, not someone else. You have to parent the way God calls you to in your own heart, and I thank Him for doing just that every single day...because I sure need His guidance everyday!

this is a wonderful book. i have read it through twice, but still have so much to uncover from it. This was the first and most foundational parenting book i have ever read. This book is excellent for someone wanting a "why" do we parent book and is very good theologically.
