I essentially bought this book cause of its high rating and all the praises it received from the readers. So, I bought it.First off, this book was expensive. Compared to the other paperbacks of the same genre, this was pricey, for a student like me. But hey, I'll pay good money if the story is deserving of such. This was not. Like a large print book, the entire book, from chapter 1 to finish was only 200 something pages. Quality not quantity, I know, but what pisses me off is that there weren't any quality to the story. My first and foremost problem with this novel is with the style of writing. I don't know if its because its the author's first book in the series, but this book was terribly written. Not in terms of grammar but the style of writing. The author, Radclyffe, wrote the entire book like she was writing a bad fanfiction. Fanfiction! And trust me, I know a little something something about writing fanfiction. Particularly in sex scenes. The woman writes like...well, like its a bad screenplay to what heterosexual men think lesbian sex should be. I quote: "'Oh no,', Rebecca moaned, her voice tight and choked. 'You're going to make me come right away.'"(In Pursuit of Justice, p.32) Don't say it, I regretfully bought book #2. Corny writing like that are littered throughout Shield of Justice. Regardless of how steamy the scene is, lines and quotes like that draw away from the scene because, well, its too unrealistic, and quite frankly, amateurish. This is the biggest problem I had with the book. My second problem with the novel is that its not quite rounded. The protagonist, Rebecca, is in pursuit of a rapist. Fine. Excellent. But the storyline that covers the investigation, the pursuit, and finally, the explanation for the rape(s) is too disappointing for words. I was hyped in the beginning, bored during the middle, and disappointed near the end. Again without giving too much away, Radclyffe gives an explanation, the why factor, for the rapes in one chapter. The cops come in, tells Rebecca who the rapist they caught were, and explains why he rapes woman, because it was this and this. Boom. The End. I would have liked to see the backstory of the "why" factor to the assault explained in more detail. Given more room to blossom. The tragic stories to why men commit violent sex acts are always intriguing, and definitely make for a good novel. I like a good crime novel. One I can really sink my jaws into. This was not. I really put an effort to submitting an honest review.

Nicely written, this book is very easy to get in to. Both women are strong and involved in their jobs. Their love affair is touching and captivating.

A Gripping Romantic Drama,
This review is from: Shield of Justice (Paperback)
My first book by Radclyffe and a pleasure it was to read. The two main characters both high powered strong women enjoy a rollercoaster few weeks together where their emotions run high whenever they meet. This romantic/detective mystery book kept me completely hooked. The mix of romance in the story and the actual detective plot was just right! Frye is trying to get a break on a case and Dr Rawlings stands between her and the witness who is in hospital beaten by the perpetrator and suffering from amnesia. Frye struggles to stop the case coming between them. She keeps her emotions locked beneath a hard exterior, will Dr Rawlings be able to penetrate in...? Rebecca Frye needs to get the witness to remember the events that happened on the night of the attack. She is running out of time as the rapist gets personal and enters her world, she must bring him to justice.
