Product Description

From Amazon.com

Being on a sailboat in the warm waters of the Pacific with a bunch of kids the same age could sound like a vacation dream come true. However, when this month-long trip is part of a strict program called Charting a New Course, and each participant--or inmate--is there for disciplinary problems, things don't look quite as rosy. And then, of course, when a big storm strikes, and the captain and first mate disappear, and the boat seems to be sinking... the whole idea becomes less and less appealing. Still, for Luke, Will, Lyssa, J.J., Ian, and Charla, this is the way the cards have been dealt, and whatever problems they may have with each other, however much they don't want to be there, it's time to start working together to save their own lives.

The first book of Gordon Korman's exciting new trilogy introduces readers to the six troubled kids who will become unwitting partners in their desperate bid for survival. A steely captain and a gruff first mate who calls every boy "Archie" and every girl "Veronica" keep order and attempt to turn their charges into young sailors--an effort that may pay off more than any of them ever anticipate. A hint of menace permeates Shipwreck, along with humor, angst, and mystery. Readers won't want to miss the continuation of the riveting saga in books 2 and 3, Survival and Escape. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–7—Six young teens with discipline problems are sent on a sea journey sponsored by a group called Charting a New Course, an organization designed to help troubled youths straighten out their lives. With only the captain and first mate to guide them, the teens work as the crew of the sailboat. When a terrible storm hits, the captain is lost at sea and the first mate abandons the kids once he realizes the ship is slowly sinking. The teens must work together to survive the storm and a shipwreck in the first book (Scholastic, pap. 2001) in Gordon Korman's trilogy. Holter Graham's suspenseful narration successfully portrays the tension between the characters and keeps the action moving. Listeners will want to read the next two books in this hi-lo series—Survival and Escape (both Scholastic, 2001)—or wait for them to be released on CD.—Karen T. 5.0 out of 5 stars 6 kids must all depend on eachother for survival., Oct 24 2001
By
This review is from: Shipwreck (Island, Book 1) (Paperback)
Six children are sent to a boat (Pheonix) in the Pacific Ocean to learn discipline. It's either that or jail. Luke is pretty much the leader and the most sensible amongst the group. He was sent the Pheonix because he was accused of having a gun at school. Lyssa and Will were sent to the Pheonix because they would have so many fights and arguments over stupid things(once they almost killed eachother)and would never get along. Charla, the athletic girl, who is perfect in every way was sent to the Pheonix because her parents thought it would be a good experience for her. Ian was sent to the Pheonix because he watched too much tv and needed to get a taste of the outdoors and J.J. (the son of a famous movie star) was sent to the Pheonix because he broke the law a number of times and it was decided that he should leave town for awhile. These kids are on a boat together with an encouraging captain and the "Ratface" Radford who finds all the kids worthless in every way. Disaster strikes and everything goes even more downward then it already was. The group of kids must depend on eachother to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!, Dec 10 2006
By
This review is from: Shipwreck (Island, Book 1) (Paperback)
Please don't let the other reviews dissuade you from reading this fantastic book! The first in a truly magnificent series, this book is highly addictive. It is about a program for troubled youth that involves a month long seafaring trip across the Pacific Ocean. All of the kids are there against their will, but when drastic circumstances force them to come together and pool their resources to survive, they begin to work as a team.

My favorite charachter was Luke, I thought he was very empathetic and didn't deserve to be on that trip at all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure, Feb 2 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Shipwreck (Island, Book 1) (Paperback)
My 9 year old 3rd grader (girl) read this book and found it thrilling. (So of course I had to read it too!) She can't wait to read the 2nd book. A bit reminiscent of "Holes" (though not of the literary quality/depth), a group of kids, each with a unique situation, is sent on a sailboat trip to learn teamwork. Disaster (after disaster) strikes and they are in a struggle for their lives.
