Book Description

Oct 4 2011 A Virgil Flowers Novel (Book 5)

The thrilling new Virgil Flowers novel from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.

The superstore chain PyeMart has its sights set on a Minnesota river town, but two very angry groups want to stop it: local merchants, fearing for their businesses, and environmentalists, predicting ecological disaster. The protests don't seem to be slowing the project, though, until someone decides to take matters into his own hands.

The first bomb goes off on the top floor of PyeMart's headquarters. The second one explodes at the construction site itself. The blasts are meant to inflict maximum damage-and they do. Who's behind the bombs, and how far will they go? It's Virgil Flowers's job to find out . . . before more people get killed.

Review

"Once you start Shock Wave, you'll read it straight through, quickly, compulsively, happy the whole time to be in such good hands.”--The Washington Post

“Wry humor, a fully realized lead, and tense atmospherics…one of his best outings to date.”--Publishers Weekly

“The Flowers series is…formed from the same elements that make the Davenport books such a joy to read: sharp characterization, witty dialogue and, at heart, a gritty, often puzzling mystery. If Shock Wave is any indication, Flowers has a better than even chance of equaling if not surpassing Davenport in the hearts and minds of Sandford’s legion of readers.”--Bookreporter.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Explosively good Oct 11 2011
By CGP TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Unlike many authors of roughly his generation, John Sanford isn't experimenting with new--and usually unsuccessful--formats, characters, or styles. Shock Wave is another Virgil Flowers success that I couldn't put down. Waited weeks for the book and finished it in a day. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Good plot, credible characters, nice touches of humor, and a satisfying ending you don't quite see coming. Very much Sandford at his reliable best.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Excellent Sandford Is Losing His Edge Jan 22 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Not surprisingly, after a great career as a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and a crime-drama author of over 30 best selling novels, Sandford is definitely slowing down and his work is suffering.

Nothing last forever they say, and sadly that is true of authors as well. I found multiple questionable plot twists and statements in this book. Flowers is becoming a caricature from novel to novel, there is little depth to him, he has a smart mouth and independent views, that's about it.

The most enjoyable part of this story is the dialogue. Sandford always shone with his witty repartee and 'guys will be guys' take with a Minnesota flavor. I'm glad I did not dish out the cost of the hardcover.

The lenght of the book has been modified to look much more than it is, with large margins, double paragraph spaces, and an excerpt from the next installment at the end. These are annoying, but are a publishing decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read Dec 8 2012
By Robin TOP 1000 REVIEWER

I loved this book, John Sandford knows how to catch the readers interest right away, the plot is well thought out and there is enough action to keep your interest. I read it far too fast and was left without a good book to read. I spent my money well. Robin
