Review

Birders, long in need of a global shorebird field guide, can safely replace three or four other volumes with Chandler's comprehensive new volume. A member of the editorial board for British Birds magazine, Chandler (North American Shorebirds) is a bona-fide expert who puts all his research and experience to use. The photos are ideal, with excellent contrast between birds and their backgrounds, bringing even the most camouflaged color schemes to vivid realization. . . . Each species is accompanied by a seasonal distribution map, and a thorough bibliography and index backs up clearly written text. Tiny type size aside, the book's layout and typeface make for easy reading, even under poor light conditions, making this a highly practical, benchmark guide. -- "Publishers Weekly

Sharp, well-chosen photos. -- Matt Mendenhall, Birder's World

An excellent addition to any shorebirder's library. . . . The magic of Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia lies in how the procession of northern hemisphere shorebirds plays out, a continuum that blends American into European into Asian species until at last one understands the bigger picture of birds of the shore. -- "10,000 Birds.com

Chandler's book incorporates outstanding photographs of each species in most of their plumages. . . . His text is quite detailed and scientific. . . . This book is invaluable and extremely useful in the field. -- Wayne Mones, Audubon Magazine blog

Birders with a special interest in shorebirds will want to get this new guide. -- Federick Brock, Wildlife Activist

Beautiful and well-designed. . . . Of all the various field guides I have ever seen, these . . . are by far the best. -- James Swan, ESPNOutdoors.com

Chandler's new photographic guide is my first choice for shorebird identification. Because the author is a world authority on shorebirds, I eagerly awaited this latest addition to my shorebird library. . . . Having used it for several months, I highly recommend the guide for its easy-to-use format, authoritative text, large sharp photos with concise captions, and innovative ways of describing critical identification marks. It is invaluable for identifying shorebirds in North America and for birders travelling to Europe and Asia. . . . It treats all shorebirds across the Northern Hemisphere, it is easy to use, the photos are large and illustrate all plumages, the captions are concise with essential identification and age information, and the text focuses on key distinctions between similar species. Shorebirds of North America, Europe and Asia is now the shorebird guide I check first. -- Jean Iron, TOC Newsletter

Shorebirds of North American, Europe, and Asia will be a welcome volume to any birder's library of identification guides. The book is relatively inexpensive and has a lot to offer any shorebird enthusiast. -- Dan Tallman, South Dakota Bird Notes

I just received this and must say that I am very pleased with it. It has great photos and detailed information about each bird. Like most guides, it has more photos of some birds than others, but is careful to provide photos for each plumage. Too big & heavy to be considered a true portable field guide, but an awesome reference book, especially in combination with "The Shorebird Guide" by Crossley, Karlson, & O'Brien. Absolutely worth the money! Now if some of those European or Asian shorebirds would fly to the Dallas/Ft Worth area.....!

Wow, What a great book on all the shorebirds of the world! A must have for any one who loves these birds. Using it has helped me with a lot of confusing I.D.'s...especially with the "ringed" plovers.
