Product Description

Review

"If you need a beer primer to keep up with the crew at the latest gastropub (and who doesn't in brew-crazy Philly?), turn to a new book from local writer Lynn Hoffman for a tasty draft of advice . . . it's also thirst-quenchingly smart."  —Philadelphia Inquirer

Product Description

This is the book for everyone who wants to be a beer expert or at least sound like one. Warm, funny and elegantly written, it just might change your life. Far-ranging in scope and written with wit and charm, this guide provides a global perspective on one of the world's most ancient and popular beverages, including how it is made, how to serve and taste it, where to find the best, and what foods to serve with it. With tongue in cheek, the author examines beer's historic connections to the Crusades, the Hundred Years War, and modern-day soccer riots. He also candidly discusses the effects of alcohol on the body and the brain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Aspect of Lynn Hoffman, Aug 19 2009
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Short Course in Beer (Hardcover)
For those readers who had the pleasure of Lynn Hoffman's literary prowess he so amply demonstrated in his novel 'bang BANG', the 'readability ' of THE SHORT COURSE IN BEER' will come as no surprise. A few years back Hoffman took us through the history and the culture of wine in his acclaimed 'THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE', taking us on a trip through the intricacies of wine production to wine tasting. In his current release he adds even more humor to his well-documented study of the art of respecting and enjoying beer. Not only is he able to almost make us taste his words and descriptions, he also provides us with enough background in the history of beer with both photographs and appendices that will make even the most doubting imbiber want to approach the beer bar! This is a great little book both for being entertained while being informed and as a perfect bread and butter gift for leaving on the coffee tables when invited to visit special friends. Whoever knew there was so much to learn - so comfortably - about BEER? Grady Harp, August 09

5.0 out of 5 stars What you really need to know, Jun 8 2009
By Peter D. Nyheim - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Short Course in Beer (Hardcover)
I think many other beer books can often be confusing. Not this one. The writing style is what really makes it to say nothing about the content which makes me want to dive in even deeper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not what I expected, July 1 2009
By R. Wilson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Short Course in Beer (Hardcover)
Nice book, but it should be called a short history of beer. Not much for info on brewing or making beer.
