Book Description

Oct 15 2007 0199231761 978-0199231768 Sixth Edition
The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on CD-ROM features the full text of the Sixth Edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, which is a complete update of this unique reference work. Based on the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary, the 'Shorter' contains an incredible one-third of the coverage of the Oxford English Dictionary, is just one-tenth of the size, and includes all words in current English from 1700 to the present day, with senses organized chronologically, plus the vocabulary of Shakespeare, the Bible and other major works in English from before 1700. The CD-ROM is designed to run on both Windows and Apple Macintosh computers. With an elegant interface providing quick and intutitive searching, it also has advanced searching facilities for in-depth exploration, allowing searching of the definitions, eytmologies, subject, geographical region of use, register, and source language, as well as the ability to limit searches by the date of a word's first recorded usage. There is also an automatic look-up facility; by double-clicking on a word in a document or web page the user can view the entry for that word. Sound recordings enable you to listen to standard British pronunciations for over 100,000 words. In addition it features a crossword puzzle solver and anagram solver. The new edition of the CD-ROM is designed to benefit all users. It offers a simple and attractive interface which is fully customizable, making it easy to change the text size, fonts, and the color of both text and background. The CD-ROM also offers all of the exciting updates made to the dictionary text. It features a new introductory essay by language expert David Crystal on the History of English, includes 2,500 new words and senses, plus thousands of antedatings of existing words, drawing on the huge ongoing research project for the Oxford English Dictionary and the wealth of information on language in use provided by the Oxford English Corpus. In addition, the work includes many new quotations from recent authors, and a complete review of spelling forms and defining vocabulary, making it the most authoritative reference work available for both modern and historical English. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on CD-ROM provides convenient and quick access to the text of the dictionary. For scholars and everyone with a serious interest in the English language, the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary provides a unique description of the historical development of the language together with excellent coverage of contemporary English, and the CD-ROM allows users to get the most out of this resource. Product Description

From Amazon

In hardcover it takes up two thick volumes, but on CD-ROM you get the same 7.5 million words of text (with half a million definitions and 83,000 quotations) on a thin compact disc. The computerized New SOED is a great pleasure. It readily accomplishes the simple task of looking up a word, providing definition, usage, and simple etymology. But the program also searches by anagram and by rhyme, by quotation and by etymology. Perusing the headword group is like flipping the pages. In this fashion, I ran across "nesh" (soft--in consistency, mind, or morals), "convell" (refute completely) and "xoanon" (primitive carved statue of a deity). My Scrabble game is getting less nesh all the time. --Stephanie Gold --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

The contents of this disc match that of its print counterpart of the same name (edited by Lesley Brown, 1997). Having said that, it's hard to believe this is a "shorter" dictionary: there are 7.5 million words on the disc, 500,000 definitions, and 83,000 quotations to illustrate meanings in context. You can approach these words in four ways: simple search (type in your word for a definition), index search (to look for headwords, derivatives, abbreviations, phrases and compound words, uses and references, and other word forms), full-text search (to search all text, etymological text, definitions, or quotations), and special search (to search for anagrams, rhymes, and phonetics). It may take a bit of hunting under those four groups to find a form-specific search that suits, but how remarkable that Oxford has made it possible within just two levels of looking. Nice features include two wildcards (* and ?) that work at the beginning, end, or middle of words, as well as a link feature that lets you use the dictionary within several word processors such as MS Word for Windows 6 and 7, WordPerfect 6.0 and 6.1, and Ami Pro 3.1. Bottom Line: What's extraordinary about this disc is how well it will serve all types of users, from those with the most casual reference question to the scholarly student of the English language. It is highly recommended for all types of libraries and personal collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars For keeps Dec 21 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is the most important source of information and reference for my future, as well as my development of language arts.
A book that offers this much information for anyone who treasures the craft of writing, or simply exploring words will hold onto all versions. Hardcover, paperback, or electronic. A real treasure.

Format:CD-ROM|Amazon Verified Purchase
Buyer beware: This product has not been kept up to date and will not open on Mac OSX 6 or 7. I emailed OUP a week ago about this but to date have not even received the courtesy of an acknowledgement of my letter.

3.0 out of 5 stars RICH CONTENTS; LACKLUSTRE FEATURES Dec 18 2002
Format:CD-ROM
Incredible! The praises many reviewers showered on this "The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary CD-ROM", (NSOED CD-ROM), makes me wonder if the item they were describing is different from the one I saw. Not at all!
As regards English references and definitions, this CD-ROM presents unsurpassed coverage. But of what use is a good item that remains elusive? Minimal features and stunted flexibility ensured that the potentials of this NSOED e-book cannot be fully exploited. It is hard to understand the reason why an esteemed publisher like the Oxford University Press, (OUP), chose to deprive consumers of the complete joy that this CD would have offered. The poor accessibility options they included in it is annoying. That is the reason why I mistook it for an imitation (i.e.: a faked version). But it is the real thing! OUP confirmed it when I complained via phone. This is quite unlike the print version. Quite unlike other OUP products! Is OUP too blind and too deaf to notice that her hard-earned reputation (on prints) is being consumed by this lacklustre CD?
Anyway, until I see a retouched version, I will not advice anybody to buy NSOED CD-ROM. The print version offers a better value for your money. The three stars I scored this CD-ROM is because of its rich contents. Flexibility is zero!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not perfect.
I also really like The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on CD-ROM (NSOED). It's not perfect, but if you really appreciate a good dictionary, this one will satisfy you. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Shorter OED
A very impressive dictionary - hardly justifies 'shorter'. I have the full unabridged OED on CD at work and bought this version for my own use at home. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars The New SOED doesn't work within WordPerfect 8.0 or 7.0
I got the SOED as a gift. It ran fine as a stand alone program. When I tried to install it to work as a macro within WordPerfect 7.0 it was not compatible. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars In fact, it does hyperlink every word
