Captures the real life of a Las Vegas Showgirl., May 30 2000
This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
I recently purchased this movie on DVD because I am a big fan of Elizabeth Berkley and watched her as she grew up on Saved By The Bell. I thought this movie was outstanding and brilliant in every way! It is beautifully shot, and the special features on this edition are neat too. The picture is great and hi-tech, and the sound is great when you have digital surround sound.
This movie is about a girl, Nomi, who is running away from a troubled past. She flees to Las Vegas in hopes of making it big as a Las Vegas Showgirl. Gina Ravera, known as Molly, takes Nomi, Elizabeth Berkley, in off the streets. To survive, Nomi works at a seedy strip club, The Cheetah. As she attends Molly's work, she realizes how wonderful it would be to be in the show, Goddess. She auditions and gets into the show. Then, a rivalry develops between the star Cristal Conners, Gina Gershon, and Nomi, and Nomi ends up hurting Cristal in roder to be the star off the show. After sleeping with the entertainment director, she ends up as the star of Goddess. All goes well, until Nomi realizes that she has hurt everyone along the way of making it big. She also realizes that Las Vegas would have probably been better if she never hitched a ride to that city. She makes a couple paybacks, and travels home with some gained knowledge of Las Vegas Showgirls.
All and all, this movie looked beautiful, and kept me wanting more. Buy this movie today, you'll never regret it.

Wonderful but sleazy, Aug 11 2009
Even though I have seen the movie on video tape and DVD, it was a good movie. Even if I do not agree with other peoples dissaproval, I would think it is wonderful. Perhaps they should have a 3 DVD set. 1 for the NC-17 rating, 2 for the R-Rating and an unrated version.

Eye candy, July 17 2004
Showgirls is one one of the most universally panned movies of the nineties. Everybody hates it, or laughs at it.
Frankly, I don't know why. Or rather, I do know why, and it is not because it is bad. OK, granted, it is pretty bad when you consider some of the acting, and most of the story. But how many movies is this not true for? Certainly it is no worse than most action flicks, and you don't see Jean-Claude van Damme being drop-kicked all over Hollywood.
The thing is that this film is obviously eye candy. And today you cannot be politically correct and not attack something like that. I notice that it moved straight to the third place nationally when it came out on video, and that it has an average rank of four out of fives stars with the audience at Amazon. Critics; can't live with them.
See it for the girls. What girls! They can even move. Elizabeth Berkley's moves are smoking sexy.
And that's all I have to say about that... (Lahf is lahk a box of chokolates.)
