Praise for Shrink Yourself

"In Shrink Yourself, Dr. Gould offers a simple but profound truth: hunger originates in your mind, not your belly. This empowering book will allow you to lose weight by recognizing the psychological stumbling blocks in your life that contribute to your emotional eating. If you're fed up with yo-yo diets that leave you feeling frustrated, confused, and powerless, you owe it to yourself to read the wisdom in this book."
- Joseph J. Luciani, Ph.D., author of Self-Coaching: The Powerful Program to Beat Anxiety and Depression

"Some things in life we can change; some things we can't. Our weight is definitely something we can change and control if we follow Dr. Roger Gould's brilliant method. Every time I'm tempted to reach for that extra sugar fix, I think about what I learned in Shrink Yourself - and I just keep on walking."
- Maud Adams, actress and model

"Obesity is an epidemic in America, and numerous experts have tried to identify its causes. Drawing on his background in psychiatry, Roger Gould makes a major contribution to our understanding of it by identifying the basic emotions that give rise to unhealthy eating habits and offering a manageable step-by-step program for readers to combat it."
- Senator Edward M. Kennedy

"It's important for long-term weight loss to change your eating habits to include healthy, whole, natural foods in your diet, but in order to motivate yourself to lose weight for the long term you need to change the way you think about eating???and about yourself. Shrink Yourself gives you the equivalent of eight therapy sessions with a brilliant psychiatrist who coaches you step by step to stop emotional eating and start feeling and looking great."
- Fred Pescatore, M.D., author of The Hamptons Diet and The Hamptons Diet Cookbook

"In this motivational, fascinating, and practical new book, Roger Gould shows readers how to lose weight by stopping and reversing the emotional eating habits they have developed over a lifetime."
- Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas and author of Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork

"This is a masterpiece: the only serious and practical guide for anyone serious about losing weight."
- Warren Bennis, University Professor at the University of Southern California and author of On Becoming a Leader

Product Description

Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a very good read., May 1 2009

This book is very good at accomplishing what it has set out to do. All of the steps to follow are gradual and do not overwhelm the person trying to work the various phases of the program. The only thing I found was that the first half of the book was somewhat long and drawn out. Perhaps I felt this way because I am already quite familiar with a lot of the information being presented. I suppose for someone with no background information in this area, this extensive insight would be much appreciated and welcomed by the reader. Overall, this is an excellent book and the price is far more reasonable than the online program that costs over $100.00. Also, with the book, you can go at your own pace. To conclude, I would say, BUY THIS BOOK! What have you got to lose except your weight and in return you will gain back your dignity and self-respect as well as control over your life. For this low price, I would say it is a small price to pay to have freedom from the chains that bind us to the hell of emotional eating. Good luck and God bless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and thoughtfully written, Sep 3 2011

Foodcoach (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I am a weight loss coach who is always on the search for resources for my clients and ways that I can bring more clarity to my own work. Dr. Gould's book is the best that I have read in the realm of emotional eating. It is clear that he writes from a place of experience rather than theory alone. It is laid out in a step by step process, he uses language that is easy to understand and the exercises are all relevant. As a book guiding you through self-analysis, I don't think he could have done a better job. I think there is something in here for everyone to gain insight into their personal relationship with food, and if you use it in a step by step manner to potentially move on from emotional eating.

Having said that - not everyone processes their emotions in the same way. Emotions have both a mental and physical component and sometimes the physical is so powerful that it will override the capacity to self-analyze. That is when a more body-based healing is necessary. Personally, I lost my extra weight over 25 years ago by using a combination of free dance, journaling, and photography - along with books that inspired and gave me insight. So as a final thought, this book may be only one of the necessary tools you need in your 'emotional toolbox' but it is a good one to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learned So Much, Aug 30 2008

(REAL NAME)
I learned so much from this book! The author talks about emotional eating and encourages his readers to search for the root of the problem. He shatters the myth that fat people have no self control, talks about how emotional eaters tend to have a negative perpective on things and how to begin to change that. My book is black and blue from all the ink marks in it :-)
