Book Description

July 12 2011
When he was the NYPD’s top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know. He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers – by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed.

Except what if one day there wasn’t?

Dave Gurney, a few months past the Mellery case that pulled him out of retirement and then nearly killed him, is trying once again to adjust to his country house’s bucolic rhythms when he receives a call about a case so seductively bewildering that the thought of not looking into it seems unimaginable—even if his beloved wife, Madeleine, would rather he do anything but.

The facts of what has occurred are horrible: a blushing bride, newly wed to an eminent psychiatrist and just minutes from hearing her congratulatory toast, is found decapitated, her head apparently severed by a machete. Though police investigators believe that a Mexican gardener killed the young woman in a fit of jealous fury, the victim’s mother—a chilly high-society beauty—is having none of it. Reluctantly drawn in, Dave is quickly buffeted by a series of revelations that transform the bizarrely monstrous into the monstrously bizarre.

Underneath it all may exist one of the darkest criminal schemes imaginable. And as Gurney begins deciphering its grotesque outlines, some of his most cherished assumptions about himself are challenged, causing him to stare into an abyss so deep that it threatens to swallow not just him but Madeleine, too.
Desperate to protect Madeleine and bring an end to the madness, Gurney ultimately discovers that the killer has left a trace after all. Unfortunately, the revelation may come too late to save his own life.

With Shut Your Eyes Tight, John Verdon delivers on the promise of his internationally bestselling debut, Think of a Number, creating a portrait of evil let loose across generations that is as rife with moments of touching humanity as it is with spellbinding images of perversity.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid follow up Mar 10 2012
By Andre Farant TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
After the success of his debut, Think of a Number, John Verdon serves up another clever thriller with Shut Your Eyes Tight. A young woman is beheaded on her wedding day. All signs point to the crime having been committed by a migrant worker employed by the victim's wealthy fiancée--but then there's the placement of the murder weapon, the school for sexual deviants, and the Sardinian crime family . . .

There are elements of the closed room mystery in Shut Your Eyes Tight, as Gurney tries to figure out how the killer left the crime scene without being spotted by any of the guests or cameras at the wedding, but it soon becomes clear that the resolution to the murder has its
roots in the past--a twisted, sordid past, naturally.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a sucker for such crime thrillers, the kind that dig deep into the characters' pasts to rectify an ongoing wrong. It's why I love Jonathan Kellerman's work, he's a master at the moving forward by hunting backwards formula. And in fact, Shut Your Eyes Tight often reminded me of some of Kellerman's titles. This is both good and bad, compliment and criticism, given that, while reading Verdon's latest, I'd find myself missing Alex and Milo rather than forming attachments to Gurney and his fellow psycho hunters.

This is a minor criticism though, one that, as mentioned, can also serve as praise, but I did have one major beef with Shut Your Eyes Tight, and it's one I'd had with Verdon's debut as well: Madeleine, Gurney's wife, continues to irritate the holy hell out of me. She is a singularly unlikable character, humourless, critical, passive-aggressive, dull, so certain that her way of enjoying life is the best way--I could go on. My biggest hope is that she'll just divorce Gurney and call it a day so that we can all be rid of her.

For now, I would read a third Gurney novel but, if Madeleine remains a significant player, and isn't developed beyond being some holier-than-thou thorn in Gurney's (and the reader's) side, I'll likely give up on Verdon and stick to Kellerman.

Okay--(breathe, Andre)--Madeleine aside, Shut Your Eyes Tight, like its predecessor, is a solid read, written with confidence and enlivened with (mostly) interesting characters and well-executed twists. I do recommend it, especially for fans of Kellerman's who've run out of Alex and Milo adventures to read, but time--and future titles--will tell if Madeleine will succeed in chasing Gurney away from his passions, and me away from Verdon's work.

"Abstain from every form of evil." -- 1 Thessalonians 5:22 (NKJV)

I am reviewing the unabridged reading by Scott Brick of this book.

Those who read the first book in this series, Think of a Numb3r, should be warned that Shut Your Eyes Tight is a much different book despite some superficial similarities . . . especially in one of the clues to the first murder. After you finish Shut Your Eyes Tight, I'm sure you'll see more similarities than appear at first.

You would think that books about serial killers would be similar in how disgusting they are to read. Well, these two books prove that there are significant differences. There's a level of depravity involved among the victims in this story that will probably leave you feeling uncomfortable . . . simply from reading the book. So if reading about disgusting things bothers you, this book isn't a good choice.

I was intrigued to find that there could be two different solutions to the same set of mysterious clues. I wonder if a third book in the series will provide yet a third solution.

The other issue with Shut Your Eyes Tight is that part of the solution contains some elements that stretched credibility a bit far for me. I also didn't find the mystery to be quite hard enough to solve to be total fun.

The best part of the story involves developing the psychological profile of Dave Gurney further. He becomes more understandable and interesting in this story.

I definitely recommend listening to the book rather than reading it. The reading builds suspense and tension in ways that I couldn't have matched in my imagination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a good mystery this summer? July 13 2011
By Luanne Ollivier #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Verdon is back with his second book, Shut Your Eyes Tight, featuring retired NYPD detective Dave Gurney. But retired may be a misnomer for Dave. He and wife Madeleine moved to the country, settling in on an idyllic piece of property. Madeleine is happy, but Dave is restless. In the first year, Dave was asked to 'consult' on a case. He agreed, but working again took it's toll on both Dave and the marriage.

When old friend Detective Jack Hartwick stops by to 'visit' and just happens to mention a tantalizing case that could use Dave's insight, he finds himself inextricably drawn in....yet again...

A young woman has been murdered at her wedding reception in a truly horrific manner. Held on the grounds of her own home, she went into the gardener's cottage to ask him to attend. Jillian never came out and the gardener can't be found. Gurney takes on the case, drawn deeper into an ugly world that goes much further than 'just' the one murder. And he does so, knowing that his wife will not be happy.

"His acceptance of the case would prove that his obsession with solving murders, even in retirement, was intractable and that their future together would be clouded. His rejection of the case, on the other hand, would signal a changed, the first step in his transformation from a workaholic detective into a bird-watching, kayak-paddling nature enthusiast. But, he argued in his imagination, as though she were present, black-and-white options are unrealistic and lead to lousy decisions, because by definition they exclude so many solutions. In this instance the most tenable course would surely lie in a middle ground between black and white. He would accept the case, but with a strict time limitation - say one week. Two weeks maximum."

I loved the enigmatic character of Madeleine in the first book and have come to appreciate her even more in this second novel. She says volumes without uttering a word. Verdon has done a fantastic job with this character. I find this secondary storyline and exploration of their marriage and relationship just as engrossing as the mystery.

And the mystery is good. What sets Dave Gurney apart is his careful, analytical mind. It is intriguing to follow along with his thought processes as he links together seemingly disparate incidents and clues.

"The thing of it is, the whole damn case is like that. Everyone connected with it is either a genius or a lunatic or...a pathological liar or...I don't know what."

As I said when I reviewed Think of a Number, I wasn't sold on Dave Gurney. I still haven't embraced him as a character I can say I really like, although we are shown a little more of what makes the man tick this time. But this isn't a bad thing at all. Verdon has created an interesting, flawed protagonist that doesn't fit a mold. Just as Gurney is unable to resist the pull of an unsolved case, I am hooked by Verdon's characters and writing. I am very much looking forward to the next chapter in Dave Gurney's life.
