Descriptions du produit

Amazon.com essential recording

An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--"Cherub Rock," the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. "Disarm" is a nice intermission halfway though the album. As the title of the song suggests, it throws the listener into a different mood with its full string arrangements and radiant orchestral chimes. But then it is back to the aural masochism--a pain that rarely sounds so sweet. --Beth Bessmer

5.0étoiles sur 5 awesome, Juil 26 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Little did any of us initially realize that "Today", Smashing Pumpkins' red carpet to the glorified frat houses of alternative rock radio, took part in something much greater: sophomore release Siamese Dream was borne out of the band's intense personal and interpersonal turmoil-- so much so that Billy Corgan was left in the studio to play most of parts by himself. Nominally, Siamese Dream implies some duality: the album title reflects at once its confidence and its vulnerability, its anger and its broken-heartedness, its honesty and, however therapeutic, its self-deceit. Avoiding the sparse, punchy grunge tropes of the time, Corgan opted instead for personal and melodramatic epics told within grandiose walls of sound that seemed to function as the music's own consolation. The fanged opening moments of "Rocket" speak to this effect, and comprise some of the most potent moments in 90s rock. Smashing Pumpkins never again achieved this degree of sincerity-- compare the poignant yelp of "let me out" in opener "Cherub Rock" to the nasally embarrassment of "God is empty just like me" in Mellon Collie's "Zero"-- but then, shouldn't one decade-defining album be enough?

5.0étoiles sur 5 One of the best albums of the 90's..., Janv. 1 2007
Par Kelly B (England, UK) - Voir tous mes commentaires
FORGET Nevermind.

This album is in a league of its own.

I bought this album around four or five years ago, after only hearing two songs by the band. The Smashing Pumpkins are now my favourite band, and Siamese Dream is my favourite album.

I listen to this album at least once a month, and it's a wonder I haven't needed to replace it yet! I won't go in-depth on every song; but I will say that this album would be a worthwhile addition to your CD collection, wherever your taste in music lies.

This album displays the perfect blend of soaring guitars and clean vocals. All the layers upon layers adds a certain quality to this album. You KNOW it wasn't recorded in a fortnight in some pokey studio in the middle of nowhere. This album has been carefully tweaked and re-tweaked into the masterpiece it has become. This is something very few bands since the demise of the Pumpkins have been concerned about.

One of the things I love most about this album is the constant see-sawing of emotions, ranging from moody, to quiet, to uplifting and bitter.

Stand-out tracks are the classics 'Today', 'Cherub rock', and 'Disarm'. Personal favourites of mine are 'Quiet', 'Hummer', 'Rocket', and 'Geek U.S.A.'.

This album really made an impact on me. Apart from introducing me to a whole new kind of music, it also gave me the inspiration and motivation I needed to learn guitar. Whatever mood I'm in, this album has seen me through it.

Buy this CD now, you won't regret it!!!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Their best song, and best album altogether, Mars 22 2006
Par James (Toronto, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This might not be the longest Smashing Pumpkins album, or have the most radio singles, but it is by far the best and most cohesive album Billy Corgan put out, from beginning to end. The production is raw and in-your-face, unlike their later, over-produced albums. This album is fresh, vital rock music. Definitely one of the best mainstream rock albums of the 90's.

It has some of the band's biggest singles on it... The inspirational, (somewhat) uplifting "Today", the loud, melodic "Cherub Rock", and the acoustic favourite "Disarm", complete with dramatic bells and strings in the background. Also the lesser-known "Rocket", a decent song that kind of goes on pleasantly, with a dramatic ending ("I will be free!")

However the strength of this album is not just its singles, but almost all of the songs are excellent, or at the very least pretty good, and some of these album tracks should be considered "up there" with the band's best-known songs.

There's the rocking "Geek U.S.A." with one crazy guitar solo in it; "Mayonnaise" which is a nice softer, melodic song; and the ABSOLUTE highlight of the album, "Soma".

This song has got to be the VERY BEST thing Billy Corgan did. It starts off with an absolutely dreamy delay-and-reverb soaked clean electric guitar, then the gentle, depressing verse comes in "Nothing left to say/nothing left to do/but run away from you." The song progresses further, then quiets... then... BAM! The distorted guitar kicks in with such appropriate force it blows the mind. This song has the best, most personal, heartbreaking lyrics Billy ever wrote about a failed relationship, and also one of his very best guitar solos EVER (it was played with a bow!). It is often overlooked because of its placement in the middle of the album and the fact it wasn't a single.

Siamese Dream also has some very cutesy-sweet songs on it, typical of the Pumpkins, such as "Spaceboy" and "Sweet Sweet", they are both pleasant and nice, while somewhat cheesy, they don't offend the ears, and also add a welcome variety to the generally hard-rocking sound present on the album.

Overall I highly recommend this album. It might not be a life-changing album, but for many people it was, and its music will always stick with me, no matter how much Billy Corgan may suck nowadays (well, it's the truth!). You will not be disappointed with this album.
