Product Description

In Sicko, filmmaker Michael Moore returns with a hilariously scathing indictment of America's failing health system. Combining powerful personal testimonies with shocking statistics, Moore pulls the curtain back on the greedy HMOs, drug companies, and congressmen who keep us ill. Traveling to Canada, England, France, and Cuba -where free universal health care is the norm - he forces with question: Why can't this happen in the U.S.? Timely and touching, the Special Edition of the film includes bonus material written and directed by Michael Moore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bias, but a great film none the less, Jan 24 2008

In the DVD's special features, there's a very short news clip of an anchorwoman and an anchorman calling this film propaganda. I wouldn't go so far as to call it propaganda. It's definitely biased, but that's Michael Moore for you. As biased as he is I do find him to be an entertaining documentary film maker and he does cover topics that aren't much talked about. The issue of a single-payer healthcare system is one that apparently comes up often in the US, but it rarely seems to get much press time and is often trumped up to some kind of communist or socialist system that is going to ruin the lives of Americans. At least Moore effectively points out that there are a significant number of Western democracies that have some form of nationalized/socialized medical system. That's something I doubt many Americans would be aware of if it weren't for filmmakers like Moore.

The film covers the main positive aspects of nationalized/socialized medicine in places like Canada, the UK and France. It does not, however, talk about the challenges that we face in such systems. I personally think that Moore would have added a little to the film if he had said "Nationalized medicine isn't perfect" and gave examples of why because all he did was leave the door open for his critics in the US to jump all over what he left out. That being said, it is a good film and it's typical Michael Moore. The quality of the film is right up there with all of his other successes and it's worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Mar 19 2012

Don't be put off by the title; there's a lot more to it than what the unfortunate title implies. It gives some detail of the conditions in the US of A for people that don't (as well as those that do) have private or public medical insurance.

It also gives overviews of health insurance in other countries, such as Canada, Cuba, the UK, and some countries in Europe.

Moreover, it describes other very much related issues, such as the level of awareness of the US of American public, the scourge of private corporation dominance, and unpublicized leadership of highly conscious (and conscientious) individuals. This information is included in interviews with these individuals in the DVD Extra submenu of the main menu. "Conscientious" is not meant to mean anti-capitalism here, though of course conscientiousness has become rather absent from what capitalism has become in these "modern" times.

I was at first sceptical of purchasing this DVD because of its title, but am so impressed with it that I've bought a whole lot, to be delivered to various friends and acquaintances.

4.0 out of 5 stars A shocking and revealing look at the American "disease" industry, Dec 30 2007

This film has renewed my faith in Michael Moore. I've always liked his films however Farenheit 911 had dissapointed me tremendously, as it came across as a biased piece of leftist propaganda and a giant rant against the Bush administration. Well, Moore has certainly redeemed himself in my eyes with "Sicko", which attacks the U.S. private medical for-profit system.

Moore shows us touching horror stories of average American people who have fallen prey to what has become a disease industry, where the uber-rich elite of the medical and pharmaceutical system reap huge profits at the hands of the poor who cannot afford, or are deemed uneligible, for medical insurance. The one quelm I have is when Moore compares the U.S. system to that of France, Great Britain and Canada and makes it appear as though those systems are without flaw. I live in Canada and the long wait times I've had to endure make me think otherwise but granted, I'll take our public health system over the American one hands down. In the end, "Sicko" proves to be revealing, shocking but also funny and highly entertaining.
