4.0 out of 5 stars An honest review, Oct 30 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Game of the Year (DVD-ROM)
Civ 4 is without a doubt a great game; here is how I would break it down:
PROS:
- Gameplay improved enormously in the sense that you can now literally play a quick game of civ. Your starting position doesn't matter as much as civ3 meaning you can easily start up a game and play for 'quick' fun (which in my opinion was impossible in civ3).
- Graphics and sound are a big improvement from civ3.
- AI is a more interesting advesary on many levels (military, diplomacy, etc).
- The tech tree is much more interesting as well as you can go any path you want, skipping techs you dont care for. (This was not possible in civ3)
CONS:
- In my opinion (this is just my honest opinion where people will differ from with good reason)-- I do believe the overall strategy of the game has been brought down from civ3. Units now have only one strength variable instead of an attack and defence. A lot of people like this new way and believe it makes war more interesting, especially with the new unit promotions. I think the old way required much more strategizing on our part.
- The game goes by a little too quickly for those who want a long thinking game.
- Religion is an awesome new feature yet I would of liked to see it more 'multilayered'. All religions do exactly the same thing, i would of liked to see certain religions more useful for certain playing styles. (Firaxis probably did this to stay as uncontroversial as possible).
OVERALL:
I give this game 4/5 stars. This is most definately one of the best strategy games ever. With that said, i dont think civ4 replaces civ3. It has become more of a new game, more easily played for those who want to play a quick fun game and still finnish their homework on time. Civ3 requires a lot more thinking and is more rewarding in the end than civ 4 is. I will probably play civ4 a lot(more so than civ3), however when my mood needs a nice thinking challenge of strategy, i dont think civ4 will cut it, and then i would need to play civ3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sim!, Mar 21 2012
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Game of the Year (DVD-ROM)
This game is a wonderful continuation of the "Civilization" series. I highly recommend getting the "Beyond the Sword" expansion. It greatly expands game-play, makes the game more complete.

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Game of the Year (DVD-ROM)
As a CIVILIZATION fan since the first DOS-version, I cannot begin to express my OUTRAGE towards FIRAXIS!!!

Sure, the graphics are nice; however, CIV games were always about large map overviews. This one trades off size for walking and rolling units. Apparently for a reason...

Spyware installation issues apart, CIVILIZATION IV was so prematurely released, it is hardly a beta version! Once you reach the 20-city limit this premature contraption crashes to the Desktop. Sometimes even sooner...
Unless you are willing to download the 78MB Patch (which only partially corrects all the shortcomings) play the Demo, that's all you are gonna play anyway!

Let's not encourage the lazy corporate cats make a bundle in our expense.
Replay CivIII and its expansions OR wait until the release of the..."Expansion Bundle". By then, hopefully, the game will have been finished!
