The Path to Enlightenment, Aug 30 2005
By Shawn Edwards - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Siddhartha - Bilingual Edition, German & English (Paperback)
Siddhartha is an essential book. Unless you have read Siddhartha, you have missed a major milestone in literature, eastern philosophy and personal growth. Hermann Hesse was a master of the written word. That's why he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature and why you should own a copy of his most popular novel. Having it in both English and German is a real plus, even if you don't read German; someday you might.
Several of Hesse's other works, Steppenwolf and Magister Ludi, in particular, are also excellent, but there is something special about Siddhartha that touches the heart of almost everyone who reads it. The human core of the character Siddhartha, throughout his quest for enlightenment, is more than a little familiar; it could be any of us.
In its own way, the narrative unfolds the essential elements of Buddhism without try to sell it to the reader. It illustrates the point that there are many paths to enlightenment, but only a few ever really achieve it.

An Extraordinary Book, Oct 14 2005
By Kevin Curan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Siddhartha - Bilingual Edition, German & English (Paperback)
Siddhartha is, in itself, and extraordinary book, but this particular version is really exceptional. Having a masterpiece such as this in both its original language and in its English translation is a treasure. You really get two books for the price of one.
It is impossible to praise this book highly enough. Herman Hesse was a fine writer and a fine human being. Siddhartha is deservedly one of his most popular books. It has become a classic because it is a great story about the very essence of human existence - the human longing for knowledge and truth.
If you don't own a copy of Siddhartha to read, and re-read from time to time, you really should get this book. It is one of the most important depictions of Eastern philosophy ever produced and is particularly noteworthy because of its European origin.
If you do already own a copy of Siddhartha, you should get this edition anyway. Even if you don't read German, just being able to compare the English translation to the original text, with the closeness of the German and English languages, will give you a better idea of how well Hesse expressed himself.

An interesting way to learn a foreign language, Jun 18 2008
By Joan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Siddhartha - Bilingual Edition, German & English (Paperback)
I used to study German many years ago, but I was not able to improve my skills due to the difficulties of the German grammar. After 4 years all I could read were those silly learner's booklets, which didn't interest me at all. Luckily, I found a book that is interesting by itself. Reading both the English and the German versions of the same text, I can enjoy a real masterpiece in two ways: by understanding it, and by realizing how it is written and how "it sounds". And I'm improving my German, too. As German is quite similar to English (at least, from a South-European language speaker's point of view), a German-English book is better for me than it would be any German-Catalan or German-Spanish book... which has never been published, by the way.
