Not Siege: Thor, Siege: Asgardians!!, Dec 17 2010
By Austin Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Siege: Thor (Hardcover)
Well opening up this book, knowing the low ratings it got, I had low expectations. The first thing to mention though is Billy Tan's art is definetely my favorite of this volume. I was very surprised on how well it was. Just in the first few pages I was impressed. The most interesting characters in all of this is definetely Volstagg and Loki. Gillen was very smart on his part to make them the center of attention most of the time, becuase I can never get enough of Volstagg. I was smiling and grinning quite a bit from his humor. And of course Loki, because Gillen seriously writes the best Loki I've seen for a long-time, he reminded me of a lot of Simonson's Loki, which in my mind is great!
What was the most fun about this read was reading it side-by-side with Siege. First I read Siege #1, then Thor #607, then Siege #2 then Thor #608 and you know the rest. Since Siege is mostly action 85% of the time, it was nice to get a break in between and see what was going on with the Asgardians, making Siege feeling lengthier which I thought was good. If you buy this without Siege, you will be extremely dissapointed, because you're missing a lot of Thor.
Normally when I read Thor comics I don't always read for just Thor. There's so many side characters that I want to know and see, that is was a good change from all of it, Balder's character has interested me since Balder's appearances in the past appearances from JMS and Gillen. I love watching Balder struggle being King and how he's dealing with it. Same with Heimdall and Tyr who get so little light shed on them, this was a good time for them to shine and get to see their characters more. So I was completely okay with this.
The Thor replacement in this book is Ragnarok, and he and Volstagg have some classic stuff, with an extremely memorable fight that kept me grinning. The one-shot with Loki was truly a high-light for Gillen, making me think he should write a series just for Loki. Thor #610 was a good epilogue to wrap up things for Siege, and gave Thor to unleash some of his anger, seeing Braithwaite's art in this issue in my opinion gives stuff more of an epic feeling. This was a fun volume, Gillen definetely tried his best and I was pleased with it overall. Although not the best, JMS's Vol. 2 is still my favorite of the recent Thor, this was fun and a great side-by-side read with Siege, but a little weak on its own.
It's not essential. If you got some extra bucks and plan on buying Siege and a fan of Thor, I verily recommend it.
(Update-- I wrote this before I knew Gillen was going to write the new Journey into Mystery series with Loki as the central character. I'm glad Marvel recognized that Gillen can write a truly awesome Loki.)

Main Event is Way Better, Sep 2 2010
By Tyler S. "Super-Review" - Published on Amazon.com

Trust me. Siege has more to offer Thor fans than Siege: Thor. This book digresses way to much into this side plotline that involves the dead being ushered to Hel, and Loki's vague mayhem with the deceased. I couldn't really wrap around what he was up to, and I ended up not caring much for it. What sells here, is the Volstagg plotline, and the central connection to Siege. Everything else just fills pages with unnecessary filler. At least in Secret Invasion, we got a Thor sidestory that was actually worth the buy. This spinoff of an event feels unimportant. The story doesn't progress after the Siege, it just gives more details about the event. It's just too bad those details don't add up to anything.
However beautiful Tan's artwork is, Thor: Siege cannot be saved from its flaws. I felt like I was getting the right tones and characters, but the story was just lame. I do however love Loki's line "This isn't mischief...It's mayhem." But I'll probably forget that it was within this mediocre book and connect it to something else. You're really not doing any harm to yourself if you just get Siege. Siege was already a Thor story anyway, while this one feels farther from its source material. Ironic isn't it?

Just read Siege, Sep 9 2010

First of all, I have purchased every Thor trade since his rebirth, so I would have still bought this even if I had read it beforehand. That being said, this book is god-awful(no pun intended). Thor is barely in it and it would make no sense if one has never read Siege. Siege is a much better Thor title than this could ever be, so skip this unless you are a completist.
